Hi all,

Have just aquired a 23ft Cleopatra motor boat and I know nothing about them. can anyone shed any light on this model? It has a toilet compartment, small galley and a twin V birth. It also has no engine! I have no idea what engine to put in it, any ideas? The boat is in reasonable condition and is water tight (the hull is full of rain water and it's not leaking). I have a mate who has been boating/sailing for over forty years and he has looked at the boat and tells me it is well worth doing up as it is in good nick. He also knows very little about them.

If anyone can plot a course to some useful info on this boat I would be most grateful.

Cheers,

Phil.

Hi Phil,

There are lots of Cleopatras around and therefore I have set up a site www.MyCleopatra.co.uk for owners. It is early days but I am reviewing it all the time. As for your boat I will be posting there is a little information about it on there at the moment but I will try and post more under 23/700 over the weekend.

Hi Phil,

I have not yet had time to post the details of your boat but as for the engine I have often wandered if it might be possible to fit outboards. I go to Abu Dhabi a lot and out there they do not like inboards so they usually convert the boats if they can to outboards. What they do is build what in effect is a bathing platform out of scaffold pipe and mount the engines on this. The size of the engines are usually quite big 200 or 250hp but it seems to work ok. If that does not suit the Cleopatra was either fitted with a single or twin often petrol engine. Mine has a single Volvo 151A 130hp engine.

HI David,

Cheers for the reply. I think it had a BMC engine in it at one time as I have found the remains of it with a load of other junk that came with it. It has a single engine cover/cowling at the rear and an opening that looks like a single leg was once fitted. I intend to fit an in-board diesel with a new leg and wanted to go down the Volvo road. Do you know what the minimum HP should be (and the Max HP come to thonk of it!).

I now off to check out your website.

Cheers,

Phil.

A wide range of engines have been used in the Cleopatra.
Various Volvo Petrols, BMC 1.5 Diesel, BMC 2.2 Diesel, Ford 2.5 FSD, Perkins 4107/8 etc. usually with Enfield Outdrives, Mercruiser petrol with mercruiser outdrive, the options are limitless.
Over the years my neighbour has gone from the BMC, to the Ford FSD and now has a Volvo 180hp Turbo Diesel with Duo Prop which gives him in excess of 28knots.
