Cleats

Re: Stregth of fittings !

My racing boat in tallinn - interesting when pushing the limits ... I'm sure that the loads that those winches go through are 'bloody-hell' !!!! And they are still going strong ... many occasions of snap squalls etc. BANGING those sheets bar-tight on the winches ..... I would claim they are 'snatch-loads' ?????

I would never argue against a proper fitted cleat ... but do not agree with toe-rail / genny track ones ...

Have I lost the plot somewhere? Why not fit centre cleats permanently with an appropriately strengthened backing plate. They are always useful, I dont see why one would want to make them detachable.

ST did an article a couple of months ago, saying it was a couple of hours for a beginner.

Re: Mmmmm ????

Not into mechanics but weight of two 4 tons (or whatever) boats rolling away from each other?

Big generality that! Perhaps a couple of hours assuming no headlining in the saloon. I ordered them to be factory fitted, which they failed to do, a retro fit would involve removing the headlining with the probability of damage.

Momemtum ....

Take a supertanker of 200,000 MT ... secured with 35 MT lines and 80 ton winches ...... takes a bit of thought !!!

The weight of the boat is only significant in a dead drop, here we are talking about when riding water and afloat, the load is proportionate to boat movement developing momemtum and the inertia to stop it moving .......

I was just trying to save the hassle of ripping of the already crumbling liner on the roof of the inside bit (forgotten the real name), so I thought a tag it on bit would suffice.

Keep it up boys, I might catch up with Simon101 on the number of posts to a thread, and I only asked a really simple non-contentious question (or so I thought - even my co-owner is questioning my sanity!)

Just to change the tack entirely....

Last week I ordered something from Compass. Two days later it turned up. It works.

There you go, 150 post thread later.....
