Cleaning your turbochargers

Not done it (yet) but the manual for my Yanmar has instructions to pour a small quantity of a special cleaner in to the turbo, whilst the engine is running, every so often. It can also be done with water. Has anyone here followed those instructions?

Be very careful. Agreed the book refers to turbo cleaning but main Yanmar agent says absolutely not. Great danger of damage to turbo if water is poured in. The Nimbus Owners Club went into this some few months ago.. Suggest speak to Barrus who are th agents for Yanmar.

Not quite the sort of solution I had envisaged!!! Surely water in a high-compression would spell disaster if too much went in? Was just thinking of unbolting the snail, wiping with a WD-40-soaked rag and replacing...

My Yanmar manual is on the boat in Turkey, so I cannot quote you exactly what it says, but essentially the instruction is to trickle a small quantity of the special cleaning fluid, or a somewhat larger amount of water, fairly slowly in to the air intake so that it passes through the spinning turbocharger. Really I do not like the idea, but that is what it says.

Hooray for that. I did not fancy doing it, and if my turbo diesel car does not need it, why should the boat?

I don't fancy it either but I guess the theory is that the boat engine works less hard than the car engine and is thus more likely to soot up the turbocharger? I would have thought that an ideal solution would be to nail the thottle to full for five minutes or so, in a suitable place of course!
