2 weeks to boat going back in the drink, and I have a weekend planned of cleaning gelcoat and canopy. Have the recommended cleaners, hose and waterproofs at the ready, but this is my 1st time so be gentle on me! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif...any tips?

depends on how grubby the gelcoat is , but Astonish is about £1 a tub from hardware stores (Astonish, not Vanish), and really is fabulous. Test a bit first, but seems great on my seats etc too. Look like new ! you ll need some polish afterwards; the teflon based ones seem good to me;easy to apply without too much elbow needed.

If you are planning to clean the boat with something that requires a hosepipe you're not going to have much luck!

Get some 3m cutting compound (fastcut I think) and set to work with mucho rubbing, best with a damp cloth. Let it dry, rub it off and then put some International polish with teflon on. Rub that off. Then some 3M performance wax, the stuff in the tin but you need to keep any moisture off it or else you will have a impossible job rubbing it off. Then put some International teflon sealer on, this is a liquid that dries very quickly and rubs off very easily. After the first layer of sealer put another coat of the wax on and then another coat of sealer. Repeat the wax/sealing routine as much as you can, 5 coats insures a clean boat for a year providing you wash it with Xymol wash and wax each time you go out. The Xymol stuff is unique in boat cleaning because it doesn't say highly flammable, toxic, poisonous, corrosive or harmful on the back but nonetheless it works.

For the canopies, get some 3M plastic polish/cleaner and rub it gently onto the 'windows', let it dry then polish it off with a wizzy buffing machine. Then get some Fabsil canvas cleaner stuff from superdrug or whatever its called, take the canopy off, lay it on the pontoon and set to work with a sponge and bucket of water. You need to hose the cleaner off before it dries or you will have white covers. Once you've washed the covers let them dry and then put Fabsil gold canvas waterproofing stuff on with a paintbrush. It costs £10 for a 600ml spray in the chandlery or erm £20 for a 3l tin of it in a camping shop.

Mucky Farters International Boat Removing Elixior.

Mind, the name changes every now and then. It's not for the faint hearted. So it's kept a bit hush, hush. You've got to have been around here a bit to be even concidered as a customer and maybe have to grovel a bit.

It's sort of comercial stuff. You can shift the [--word removed--]. Or the whole boat if you want to. You can shift your hands or feet to Intencive care ward if you want. It's up to you. Sencible folk put an egg cup full in a bucket of water. Or watch aluminium fiz when neat. You just build up the strength towards full power. If you aint got there yet. Go to far the boat sinks. Simple. How much do you want??? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If the grp is really bad then use a cleaner, followed by rubbing compound , followed by a protective layer of polish - should help prevent it from getting bad again too!

Some bloody treacle mine somewhere. Its got trolls or somesuch that gets the stuff out. You sling it down your bog and it explodes.
