cleaning rust from engine

Hopefully a simple question.
What is the easiest way to clean some rust off the engine before touching it up with some spray or paint to protect it.
Some places are hard to get to but where water dripped it is a little rusty.

I cleaned one side of one up for a friend a few years ago.

I chipped, scraped and wire brushed what I could then applied a rust remover ( Jenolite I think)

A week or so later repeated the above

and again a week later.

When I was happy all the rust had gone I painted it with Hammerite ( Hammerite because I had some)

Can you still get Jenolite, it was good stuff.

Nothing wrong with Hammerite, as long as it isn't the new formula which is little better than emulsion paint

Available as far as I know but there was a period a few years ago when it wasn't ( perhaps that was after the ship bringing in the phosphoric was in a collision in the channel

)

I have big bottle of the stuff ... "acquired" many years ago!

Emery cloth and a wire brush, I have used on occasion a wire brush that was made to brush the uppers of suede shoes (not the blue type before any one asks) the wire bristles appear to be made of brass rather than steel good for getting into restricted area's.

I have seen something called rust eater or something similar. I will try that in the smaller spaces.

Suggest remove loose rust then spray with zinc rich primer

Small wire brush head on a dremmel or similar. Works wonders in confined spaces. If you still have problems try a flexible extension cable for your drill or even a 90 degree angle drive. Good luck.

Yes, a suede shoe brush is good. Many wires brushes that look like brass are in fact steel, they rust very well indeed
