On the mast ???????

If you insist

Lay sail and mast on a clean slightly sloping floor,

Wash with a mild detergent and water, applied with a watering can, using a softish broom. Rinse gently with water from a hose. Do not jet wash.

Hang in an airy place to dry.

I am sure it would be easier without the mast!

DO NOT JET WASH! Don't ask.......

Hi there, I've made big improvements to general state of mainsail cleanliness / saltiness by waiting for a gentle head to wind situation in marina and wash sail as you hoist it starting with head. Use a soft brush on a pole dipping in a bucket of mild soapy warm water. Rinse as you go with gentle flow from hose pipe. Leave when hoisted to dry . Voila.

I took mine off and had it laundered by a local sailmaker. Seemed much easier option than trying to do it myself. Took it off, dropped it off at the sailmaker, picked it up a few weeks later. Clean and nicely folded!
