Cleaning fuel containers

How can I clean a plastic fuel container that's had old diesel in it (to use it for clean diesel) - will hot soapy water be okay if I make sure it's rinsed thoroughly?

If the container is dirty inside gunk or some other de-greaser should do the trick. I'd be concerned that soapy water might not take all the nasty things which cause fuel viruses of the insides. If its realy dirty a new container is the way foreward.

Flush it out with petrol.... Won't do any harm to diesel and will clean it quicker than elbow grease.

But what to do with contaminated fuel? Local Authorities do not seem to have any provision for disposal as they have for engine oil. Anyone got any ideas?
