I have 2 x Barient 10P sheet winches on my 21fter. Now they get a lot of use/ abuse. (25 races per season about 25 tacks per race and possibly 30 years old) (the original Barlow winches were replaced worn out sideway wobble and not latching.
The symptoms were in one winch not engaging the pauls so no holding power. After the usual clean lubricate etc. Evenn swapped the pauls thinking the sharp grip edge might be worn I have discovered the problem. In hind sight it was obvious there was not heard the characteristic clicking of the pauls. (but Iam a bit slow) The other winch was the same.
There is a wear mark on the under side of the barrel just beyond the cut out steps cast in for the paul. What has happened is that the barrel has moved downward so that pauls sit up on the smooth part of the barrel rather than drop in to the cut outs.
The barrel sits on top of the central pillar on a plain bearing surface with the 2 sets of roller bearings taking the sideways load. This bearing surface seems to have worn down. Taking barrel closer to deck but not touching deck. Perhaps there should be a washer of some sort for it to sit on. Both winches the same so perhaps not.
Anyway fix (not sure for how long) was to make up washers about 50mm outside diameter with 40mm diameter hole out of plastic. (cut from an ice cream container. Perhaps there is other material better suited to making a washer. More sailing will tell.
Now I get the lovely click again.
So question have I got it right? has anyone similar experience? Did I throw away still serviceable but worn winches 30 years ago for the same reason? ol'will
