Wonder if someone can help?

My two AD31Ps could do with a bit of a clean, they have become more than a little dusty and are greasy in quite a few places.
Any tips on what to use to clean them?
Also I am a bit nervous about squirting a hose about done there, bit worried about soaking the alternator and other electrical bits.

TIA

Yes,
I have the same question for a pair of D3's,
would like to keep them clean, but I am afraid to use the hose,
with all the electronic sensors on the engine
looking for some good sugestions ?

Always used gunk then the hose on various marine and car engines. No problems so far. I would expect a marine engine to be pretty water tolerant. Maybe not a full immersion though!

Gove it a good wash then fire it up and get it nice and hot to dry it off.

Gunk smells nice too (in my opinion).

If you brush on the gunk, then use the hose on low pressure you can probably keep the electrics fairly dry anyway.

Don't hose it off with the engine running, it will spray all over the place. Also try not to aim the hose into the air intake!!!!!

Yep, engine cleaning spray, let it work for 30 mins, rince off with hose (rinse! Don't pressure wash). Let dry for a day before restarting engine.

If winterising: give it a coat of WD40 after cleaning.

The engine cleaner mixes nicely with the water to dissolve the dirt in the bilges. Question is then what to do with the bilge water.

I prefer 'Jizer' not so pongy.

Or buy some at the local M Bike shop.
Paint on and stipple with a stiffer brush at the awkward bits.

Leave to fester for a few mins whilst the kettle is on.
Then hose off gently whilst brushing at the same time.

Dry your self off whilst having another cuppa.
Then spray a coating of 'service lube' type stuff all over.
No- on the engines not in the cuppa!
Then wipe all over with a clean rag.

The 'service luby' stuff, again go ask the Motorbike lads which one.
Not wd 40 by the way.
The Bike lads are dab hands at keeping engines clean.
Leaving a nice film on the engines helps to keep rust at bay and next time you clean it will be easier.

'Ragging' off will make sure you dont leave a slimey mess, plus its suprising as You go all round the engines and area what You may find.
Like that lost 10 mm spanner, plus you may find where summat is leaking or loose etc.

If you are nervous about water getting in the leccies.
Cover what You can with a Tesco bag or similar.
No need to mad go with the hose.
A good degreaser like the ones mentioned will do its job for you as long as you agitate whilst applying.

Glad I,m too far away to do a 'Demo' /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Jizer or Gunk, I'd warm the engine before applying so that when you wash it off it should dry that much faster. Better imho than running the engine when wet.

Yep, good point LJ forgot that one.
I always warm the engine first.
Plus it's orrible cold at the Mo!

Hey up solentphill , You've given Me a good Idea.
SWMBO says Me garden is a mess.
Think I,ll leave it till the Spring.

Curious thing is have you tried buying a decent quantity of the the brush on stuff now.Half the DIY motorist shops want to flog you a weedy little aerosol priced about the same as Chanel No5 and the other half no longer stock it.
Ended up buying 2.5L at the local factors.
Mind you have you ever bought anything actually for a car at your local garage recently.
