The sprayhood on my boat is in a right state after a winter on the water. In particular it has a fair amount of green moss along the seams.

Any tips for a cost effective & safe way of cleaning it up? I have in mind a nail brush and some washing powder in a bucket of water.

Also are any of the re-proofing products worthwhile?

Ta.

New PBO through the door today has an article about doing just that. Dunno if it makes the mag worth you buying it (mine's a freebie.....!)

Take it home and put it in the warm bath with strongish bio washing powder solution (gets green out). Spend a happy 30mins doing grape treading imitation. (If suspect allergy probs with bio powder get someone else to do it!)

and don't forget to treat with with 3-in-1 Mold killer (B&Q) followed by a good soaking with some waterproofing agent for canvas. This recipe has kept ours looking blue all season. All advice gleaned from this website a coupel of years ago /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I clean mine with a pressure washer and then reproof it with a paint-on reproofer - the spray on ones are expensive and don't give a good coverage and blow everywhere. Get it from a camping shop.

Polish the windows with car polish - removes the bloom and makes them stay nice and clear.

I always get it back on wet. Its does shrink a bit but that seems to occur mostly as its drying. Is pretty taut after drying, but seems to do no harm. Like with jeans the shrinkage is not cumulative.

If the article in Pbo is the one I think you may be refferring to, then there is a product called Renovo which is for cover cleaning, renovating and proofing. We have some which we are about to test - I would be interested to hear from anyone who has used something similar.

David

Hi,
A further query on the same subject I'm afraid.

What about the windows ? Presently mine are clear, will cleaning mold and so on off the canvas panels cause any probs for the clear bits ?

[/ QUOTE ]Not always convenient to use the bathtub - the windows don't sit flat and the fittings can scratch the acrylic surface on a plastic bath. I put 4 lengths of 4X4 timber in a square on the lawn and put a plastic tarpaulin over them. This created a shallow pool which was perfect for soaking the hood. Then I rinsed it using the garden hose. It cleaned up really well.

BTW the experts do not recommend using a powerwasher on canvas - see the Renovo website.
