Circumnavigator for £50,000?

This is more than a hypothetical question, but I'm struggling to find a decent boat for extended cruising. Plenty of choices if one has a budget of £75K, but at circa £50K there simply isn't much out there.

What I want, but refuse to pay the inflated asking prices for, is an HR-352. What I think might be ideal: a Rival 38A (prettier than the center cockpit model).

Don't want anything shorter than 36'.
Don't want a project boat.
Don't mind a modern design (even a Ben Oceanis has appeal).
Must have decent seaberths!
Speed is good. Stability and load carrying capability is even better!

So what other solid designs which can be picked up for £40-50K should I be looking at? How much do older Scanmars sell for?

Alternatively, if anyone knows of a Rival 38A which might be persuaded to come on to the market please PM me.

Am I serous? Serious enough to put the house on the market last week ...

It may ring the right bells you never know

i was interested in the responses to your query as i have a similar problem. i live in coconut grove florida and am looking for a boat with much the same budget as you. i have seen a couple of hallberg rassy's on yachtworld in your price range. likewise, you can find the occasional "oyster" or cabo rico in the 36 foot range. i'm afraid i'm not the most knowledgable on this subject but have been advised that resale prices, especially from brokers, are not near what a seller might accept as the boat market is rather depressed. good luck with your search.
 
There are a couple of Biscay 36s about on the web, both mid 30Kish, and they seem to be regulars accross the Atlantic (I think 1 of these has done it, and I know of at least one other that has), so I suspect they'd be pretty damn tough. I was seriously tempted by one, but decided to go smaller.

Stingo's boat has a lot going for it - we have been in discussion - and of all of the Beneteau's produced, the 390 is a top contender (for the price as well as the hull).
 
My first boat was a 39' flus deck ocean racer, my second was a Van de Stadt 33 ... I just feel that less than 36' just cramps life too much while 40' quickly becomes more than one person can handle (unless you're Robin KJ).
 
If you truly want to circumnavigate I would suggest that the USA is probably the cheapest market and obviously the exchange rate favourable. Worry about taxes etc later.
 
If you don't mind an older boat, an Excalibar 36 is a very capable sea-boat. Hasn't got the room of modern 36 footers, but they have been sailing the oceans since they were built in the late 70's. You can pick up a good one for 20-30k and you've got money left over to get the yard to sort out the things you don't like.
 
Have a browse round the Berthon International brokerage site here lots of great options - but mainly in the US

In the UK if you look hard you should be able to find boats like the smaller Oysters and Swans from the early 80s at about your price point
 
Rival 38a

I have a R38a but won't be parting with it just yet. There is one for sale in YM for £56k and its been there for a 2-3 months, you might get them down to your price?
 
I know of a Rustler 36 which has just come on the market. Beautiful boat, beautifully maintained, but ASKING (who knows what final price would be) is around £60K. Would echo the comments on a Biscay 36
