Mine goes to Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman for "The Long Way Around".

Yes its just another around the world account but so honest and fun..Any one who as ever delivered a Pizza should read this, and long for the open road..

Two guys (and and a 3rd bike with cameraman Claudio) BMW 1150GS machines, down thro Europe Ukraine Kazikstan Russia (again)Mongolia///across to Alaska USA and back to New York and home.

There is also a DVD, and I caught an episode on Sky One the other night..These guys have gone some to get this out as they only did the trip Summer 2004

Read it and long for the open road!

Happy New Year to you all! Nick

Looking through my nautical collection I would have to say that "fatal storm" about the 98 Sydney to Hobart race (rob mundle) is a book that anyone with a passing interest in yacht racing or life at sea would find hard to put down. (He also wrote "Ocean Warriors" which is a rollicking insight into the Volvo Ocean Race. "A voyage for Madmen" (peter nichols) is another fascinating read and for those who like to cruise... try "Slow Travel" by Mari Rhydwen. Why read other books when there are great boating tales like these around?

Slightly off topic but I've always equated boats to mens' sheds - they claim they want to sail with SWMBO, kids etc but they _really_ want to get down to the shed/boat, open the beer, light the pipe and forget the rest of us ! Discuss.

(Hey howzat for a New Year windup ?)

Now you've done it! There were suspicions before, and you've just confirmed them. Just hope she doesn't read this /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

For Patrick O'Brian fans, try "Cochrane" by Robert Harvey. It's the true story of the prototype for Captain Jack Aubrey. The description of the fight between Speedy (Cochrane's brig) and the Gamo, a Spanish frigate, exactly matches Aubrey's taking of the Cacafuego. You can almost forecast what's coming next from a knowledge of O'Brian's books. Fascinating.

I had two good boatie type books for presents this year. Ian Heard's Classic Boats of the West Country is well illustrated with paintings by the author and attarct anyone with a passing interest in mainly sailing fishing boats and also the pilot gigs. I have not finished reading Charlie Connelly's Attention All Shipping but it is a very funny tale of his journey around the all the sea areas in the shipping forecast.
