I once had a boat with a Volvo Penta MD1 engine. As spares are virtually unobtainable, when I saw one advertised cheaply, I bought it to cannibalise if needed.
I never actually needed any parts but I did dismantle the second engine to see how it works which was very educational. I would have attempted to rebuild it and sell it on but unfortunately there was a small crack in the block. Incidentally the original engine was still chugging away fine when I sold the boat a few years ago.
