Choice of small cruising boat...

Very interesting. I've had half an eye on the Achilles 24 for at least 25 years...
...it's just a pity that you pay for the styling by enduring her 4ft 8inch maximum headroom.

So get the 9mtr (29'8"). Standing head room in that and sails very very well to wind :) not that I'm bias at all.

An Eygthene 24 might fit the bill.

They sail very well, 50% + ballast ratio so a stiff boat, and you can get them for a song these days.

Some good information on the owners website, and pictures from owners all over the place.

A chum had an Achilles 24...it was clearly a choice of the rolled-up inflatable or us in the saloon, no way was it going to be both! The triple keel version has outer keels like stabilisers which dig into soft mud too easily, so she spent most of her dried-out time on her ear.

Damn! Thanks Andy, but I'd been hoping the performance disadvantage of the triple keel Achilles would be worth putting up with, for the versatility of being able to park her anywhere. They're getting distinctly affordable too...but if she's as cramped as that, and not really much good at drying out, I'll think again.

Dan,

'fraid so, I wasn't exagerating.

For a purist sailing boat on the same lines - admittedly even smaller but then again much cheaper - I'd strongly consider a Hunter 19 or Europa, if you ever get the Osprey out of your system.

As mentioned they don't stay upright on soft mud, but then they don't actually invert either. :)

However I'd say don't get too hung up on headroom, the A22 is also 4'8" and I don't find it a problem, in port on holiday - so it will be raining - I find a simple boom tent helps a lot.

Good sitting headroom and a good table ( for charts or all sorts of stuff ) seem more important.

I'm not crazy about sprayhoods as with the best will in the world it's unlikely to be able to see much through the windows, and they always seem to be at exact eyesight blocking level no matter what boat and where I stand.

Same as dodgers, I often think ' if they were solid grp people would moan ' what a tub ', but somehow being canvas makes the windage OK...

Thanks again. I haven't the least intention of getting the Osprey out of my system, she's a permanent fixture...but when the wallet permits, I'd like to consider a cabin.

I saw an early Hirondelle last week and liked her more than I'd expected to...I'll look at those Hunters too. :encouragement:
