From this morning's Greek newspaper (in English) Kathimerini...

A family of five that ran into trouble off the Cycladic island of Kythnos on Sunday morning when their yacht began to take on water, has been brought to safety and is currently in the port of Lavrio in southeastern Attica, Coast Guard officials reported.

The family of five was enjoying a yacht trip around the Cycladic islands when the anchor opened a hole in the hull as it was being pulled up and the vessel began taking on water in choppy seas caused by high winds southwest if Kythnos.

The husband issued an SOS signal and made off in the life raft in order to seek help. He was found several hours later drifting away from the yacht, where his wife and three children had remained as they awaited help.

Coast guard officers were able to rescue the husband in the life boat as well as his wife and children from the yacht, before it went down as it was being towed to the port of Lavrio.

All the members of the family were reported to be in good health.

I kind of hope they mean that he made off in the dinghy rather than in the liferaft....glad they're all safe though.

What kind of a boat can be holed by it's own anchor?

The key phrase is "as it was being pulled up". They clearly left it hanging just out of the water for some time and in the bad weather it's swung back and forth and taken chunks out of the bow. I've seen a yacht (in Malta in 2005) that had a whole section of the bow ripped away - it was a large yacht on delivery and the anchor had slipped loose and was hanging straight down. The passage was so rough with lots of slamming and nobody heard or felt the anchor taking great chunks out of the boat. And no, that wasn't a Bavaria either. :)

Dangerous things, anchors.I think I'll leave mine ashore from now on!

Quite, if my boat couldn't take a few weeks' worth of being smacked by the anchor I would have to keep well clear of all the Welsh overfalls & races that I keep sailing into. Maybe it was a plywood boat & a tad ripe?
