Hello all
we were trying to exit the marina Sunday 1230 ish and could not make any headway due to dinghies crossing the channel from the club opposite, infact the mobo infront of me was stationary trying to hold off the shallows whilst they all milled around him, haveing got out and trying to come back in the same thing happened they were all going back .A yatch coming out of the marina was actually T boned buy one of the blighters, thats why I am on this forum, If the skipper of that boat wants the name etc of the culprit pm me I know him.
Regards

I agree, it can be impossible in many places.

I have seen it from both perspectives ie Dinghy and Yacht. God knows what will happen if East Head does get washed in to Chi harbour (see post below) I think that there is just not enough room for everyone. My yacht got T-Boned earlier this year leaving me with £1400 worth of damage.

We have just the opposite problem in Pompey. When QHM tries to keep traffic under control the ' I know my rights ' gang start bleating. You just can't help some people. Perhaps when East Head goes you can have a dual carriage way.

Shame that. There were a lot but they showed all necessary skills in avoiding me when I was on my way in. Worse I thought was that I had to wait for a seemingly endless procession (mainly visitors I guess) coming out. Then they closed the lock for peds. When it opened again they continued with outbound traffic to clear the fairway in the marina! Meanwhile the only breeze of the day pins me to the waiting pontoon whilst I'm virtually single handed. (Nipper bit tired see)...

Anyway the club dinghy section are very conscious of the restricted channel, so I'm sure that they will listen constructively.

It's surprising how many of the "I know my rights" brigade become very humble and contrite when asked if they also know the regulations in force for Pompey harbour.

Are these kinds of problems (dingies and marina managers) usual for Chi marina? We are thinking of moving the boat over there for next summer, but this doesn't exactly paint a rosy picture.....

Make a complaint to Chichester YC. I'm pretty sure that there is a club rule that states any boat in the marina entrance channel has priority over racing dinghies.

I've had a similar experience. I just put it down to inexperienced crew dropping the buoys off in the wrong place, or a very inexperienced Race Officer, who unkowingly has set a course which could lead to serious consequences for both the dinghies racing and other users.
I just hope that it is not someone being "bloody minded"

These are not regular occurrences, and Chichester is a great place to sail from.

We were bringing Cornish Maid in at that time, 12.30, and had a problem weaving between the dinghys. HWMBO stated very firmly that I should run them down, but that is an RYA teacher for you. Mind you, the Lasers and Mirrors I had to avoid on the way up to the lock certainly didn't give any indication that they knew we were immediately behind them. I wasn't up for scratching our beautiful topsides! The trouble is that the club starts and finishes the races to the left of the channel up to the lock, so inevitably there is something of a crush for that bit of water. And it will always happen at free flow! Now there's sensible.

I've been there eleven years and never once had this problem. Yes there was a lot of milling about on Sunday but I've had far far worse elsewhere. Chi Yach Club are not "posh", they are all regular family people and the club has a responsible attitude toward the channel. The club is after all, virtually in the marina!

No reason to disbelieve there was an incident but I can't see why the yacht owner wouldn't have been able to get it dealt with in the regular way?

which of the many problems voiced on this and the mobo site are you referring to
The main one as I see it is the safety question. What is the correct way to deal with a boat that hits you and then buggers off. do these people have training in the collision regs as opposed to motor gives way. etc we could both go on for an age.
HSE are going to get back to me as its a new one on them

<<which of the many problems voiced on this and the mobo site are you referring to >>
The problem that has been aired on this thread regarding dinghy's sailing in the channel to Chi Marina and causing problems to vessels in respect of R.A M . Plus a reported collision. I have not viewed any threads on the mobo site.

<<What is the correct way to deal with a boat that hits you and then buggers off>>
Did the yacht skipper immediately seek the assistance of the safety boat and/or marina? Was he unable to note any mark or number of the dinghy concerned?
