Chichester Marina lock closed for works

I find it amazing that such a big marina only has one fairly small lock. I love the marina but the one lock would be a bind to me if I was berthing there!

I think the size of the lock is dictated by the inflow of water into the marina basin. If the lock was too big then I could see the marina drying out or having serious level problems during a busy weekend in the summer.

Did they give you notice, did they make alternative arrangements with another marina for those that require it for the duration of the works?

At this time on the Chi Marina website there is no reference that I can find to lock closure.

From their terms:
The Company may also from time to time carry out
maintenance, repairs or replacements to the lock or
its ancillary equipment and in these instances
reasonable notice will be given and details posted
at the Marina Reception and on the Company
website.
Every effort shall be made to minimise
inconvenience to Users.

So they may have slipped up and you could, maybe, look to a claim for lack of service (unless your boat is on the hard!). You should screen scape the current notices ASAP as what you see on a website this morning may have changed by the afternoon.

Nothing posted on Chi Marina facebook page or the berth holders facebook page.

edit: I've just saved the notices page for Chi marina if anyone needs it

When Premier carried out works to the Southsea Marina cill they gave plenty of notice and some folk re-located to Port Solent FOC for the duration.

Same with Chi, I got an email notification a couple of months back, and another about a week ago (from memory so timescales ify). Same deal re alternative berths in local premier marinas.

They could easily have accommodated berth holders at other marinas with so many boat out at this time of year. Seems poor customer service not to have given either notice nor the offer of a temporary berth elsewhere.

Apparently they did.

Good point-I wonder if there were 2 locks whether you could co-ordinate the usage such that a lock emptying filled up the other lock to overcome emptying the marina?

only if you pumped the water from one to the other.

As well as the emails and texts, there have been notices at the end of pontoons and on the noticeboard for some time giving notice and offering berthing in other marinas.

Well what a lot of misinformation there is here.
First bertholders were informed of the shutdown in the late summer of 2019 and reminded of it several times since and were offered berthing at other Premier Marinas on a space available and first come first served basis. It is interesting that some of the noisiest complainers (remember the reason for the half a million quid renovation and upgrade it to make things better when the season comes) are those that data show haven't used their boats in the time period concerned at any point since the last lock shut down four years ago.
Now to the bigger lock or two lock question not possible the marina would be drained very quickly. With the present lock the average lock (over the tidal range) is around 350,000 litres - low water springs it's more like 1.4m. On a busy summer weekend with a midday or early afternoon HW the marina staff will "stack" water into the marina raising it by around a metre above datum. Think for a moment how much water that is and the whole lot will be used...Aside from that there is no way on earth PML would get planning permission to extend or build a second lock. No way no how not ever.

You are falling into the same trap that I almost did! Look at the dates on the messages you are responding to - they were grumbling about the 2016 lock closure!
