YM is wrong. It's a horrible, vile place and you really do not want to vist.

It is full of sewerage.

And the chop is awful.

And there are myriad of uncharted rocks.

The people are desperately unfriendly.

The air is full of phosprus.

Er, there is an old German U-boat skipper who has not realised the war is over.

In short. STAY AWAY!

I think it is more along the lines of the harbour being crowded enough.....

However the sewage remark is sometimes not off mark if the storm water is discharged...

The other point is that you do have to pay for the privilege of using the harbour

What a weird article that is. Two photographs of Chichester marina, all biased towards the Itchenor/eastern end. Did the journos not think to investigate a bit more what its like to go up the Emsworth channel? Emsworth and Northney hardly got a mention? Was the article sponsored by Premier marinas?

Did I see you on the folly pontoon early sat morning?

Oh, and chi harbour is a cesspit full of jet skiers and and speed boats zooming around. Not to mention all the noise from the continuous rave parties going on. Steer clear of the place.

Chichester and Langstone can be exceptionally beautiful harbours if you take the time to really look and explore.
They are not Places of Scientific Special Interest for nothing. Langstone (Farlington Marshes) are home to rare birds and many species ...

I agree with OP - stay away ... it's not good place for yachties ... :)

There are several Galadriels about. This year alone I have been acussed of being in Lymington when I was elsewhere and I had a concerned text message from someone of this parish when there was a pan pan from a Galadriel.

and of a weekend its full of out of control dinghy's from a host of sailing clubs all blocking every 'orrifice of the harbour.

you will be expected (rightly) to contribute financially to harbour for daring to float within the confines of the harbour.

and if you exceed the speed limit your contributions will increase significantly - god help you !

expect the unexpected !!!!!!!! as col regs is not followed or understood by large numbers of the floating population.

other than that it's ok I suppose?????

"other than that it's ok I suppose"

Apart from the fact that 90% of it converts to mud twice a day, and the horrendous tide race in the entrance which has been known to swallow Spanish Galleons whole and spit out the wreckage somewhere in the vicinity of the Iles de Chausees.

As a relative newcomer to sailing in the Solent, I must say that I rather enjoy Chichester harbour - I've stayed in Sparkes, Northney and Birdham Pool marinas, and found them all friendly enough, with reasonable facilities. Sailing has been pretty good, but clearly you need to time the entrance, and get the tides right. Not seen the YM article, but if people have not been there, it is worth a look.

Dont talk such rubbish. its a terrible place-stay away all of you

Well I think Chi Harbour is great! Have sailed it since I was a kid. If people speed then let the harbour patrol know, as they do deal with it, and offenders get hefty fines. It does get crowded at peak season, but midweek Spring and Autumn it is well worth lingering (that applies to many other places too!!).

The sewage is an intermittant problem about which I have complained on several occasions. Southern Water is permitted to discharge from the sewage works at Apuldram, after storms, so many times a year (I forget how many). We must keep the pressure up. The filth is killing off the fish, and tales abound about infected wounds. Always wash your hands thoroughly before eating, and cover any cuts, abrasions etc. Chichester District Council does publish information about water quality in the harbour, daily on its website.

But do expore the Harbour on a quiet day - or stay away if you like - it will be all the more quiter for the rest of us!

Oh goodness - I wonder why my boat actually is then?

It can't be Chichester harbour, though I always thought it was. Where I am it is clean, quiet, and sheltered, and costs me £190 for swinging mooring and harbour dues for my 24 footer.

I am one of those strange people who likes the way things are here. I grew up messing about in Langstone Harbour, and now work out of Chichester Harbour.

Chichester Harbour is unique, so let's spread the rumour that the bouyage is IALA system "B". With any luck, visitors should end up enjoying a short stay on the Winner Bank, and hopefully leave on the next tide. :D

Let's encourage them to go to Poole Harbour, which I know from personal experience, to have more than its fair share of idiots (waterskiing at 25 knots in a fairway with an 8 knot limit), and lax enforcement.

Alternatively suggest Salcombe, with its wealthy idiots, who pay the fine and carry on regardless.

PLEASE come and visit our wonderful playground!
Complete with its sewage, "U" boats, pirates, jelly fish, and sharks, oh! and I forgot to mention THE UNMARKED WRECKS and the MINEFIELD.

Am I not right in thinking that the sewage problem is being adressed by the work being done at Apuldram?

It's my understanding that the work will make the situation "better". Which might mean that they allow raw sewage into the harbour a bit less often after storms / heavy rain. IMHO it's a total disgrace that any untreated sewage is allowed into the harbour at all, but it appears that Southern Water is not the only problem: there are many (20+?) smaller outfalls into the upper end of the harbour that are nothing to do with Southern Water...
