cherish your harbour master - a rant!

If someone came on my boat uninvited they are going straight over the side, and I don't care who they are.

I don't want to give the impression I'm a cheapskate, I really don't mind paying for a service or a benefit, but what I'm not prepared to tolerate is someone exploiting an opportunity to make money out of me without doing something to earn it.

If you go into a "harbour", or a marina, or even a stretch of river that is maintained in a particular way so that we are able to use it when otherwise we would not be able to then that is fair enough, but if a local authority think they can turn round and declare an area of natural shelter "theirs" and charge anyone who enters it then I for one will vote with my feet and go somewhere else. One of the biggest attractions of sailing is the ability to get away from the rat race and enjoy the peace and quiet you can find by going places that others can't. I'm definitely going to visit Falmouth, but I'm going to make sure I've got the option to leave straight away if they try and charge me £15 for dropping my anchor in a quiet spot.

The £15 I was Refering to was for anchoring Off the town by the docks . Not exactly a quiet spot .Also IIRC there is a time limit of 2 hours to be away from the boat . Maybe someone can clarify that .

Distortion by choice again I see; I said I check the recent reports re Bucklers Hard on here, trip advisor as well. Maybe you just can't read properly ?

The docks was a term you used, and just because the people with bad experiences of Newport are busy doesn't mean they haven't said it all before; I suspect you know a lot more of the yob problem than you care to admit, living there.

I do like your little meaningless phrases "distortion by choice" and "wilful distortion", I think they are rather amusing but you really shouldn't make things up like saying I've referred to the "docks" at Newport. Anyone who'd been there (and I have been there rather a lot, I could post some pictures if you wanted to see what it was like) would know there's no docks. You would seem to be the only one who has seen them, is that where you saw your drink and drug crazed yobs recreating a scene from the walking dead too? ;)

You have been wittering on about ' crumbling commercial walls ' which is a dock in my book.

You have also been deliberately misquoting me and changing what I have said, several times.

I haven't seen the yobs around the boats as I didn't stay around that area long, but plenty of other people have.

I have seen the yobs in other parts of Newport though, another reason I don't even think about visiting by boat and being trapped there at LW - not surprised you are so defensive about it.

If you don't want the quay etc getting even grottier, you'll have to do something about it yourself as visiting boats won't be investing in a future, possible maybe idea will they ?

I could post some pictures if you wanted to see what it was like.

Here's the bus station for those who don't want to sail there...

Er, I think you have changed what I've said and misquoted me, I have never referred to ' crumbling commercial walls ' either...

The cilled marina was floated as an idea 10 to 15 years ago - partly to provide a crossing nearer to Cowes so that the council could get rid of the floating bridge - even then it could only be seriously considered with private investment. There was never any prospect of it being built with public funds and no private investor was ever interested.

Likewise, the only prospect of development at Newport would be with private funding - unfortunately, local "river users" are very effectively preventing any attempts by the council to seek improvements. They want free/cheap use just for themselves and this is what is causing the harbour to die - it doesn't even have it's own harbour master anymore.

IW Council wanted to hand Newport over to Cowes Harbour Commission in it's entirety a few years ago but Cowes wanted the crumbling harbour walls rebuilt and the harbour made good first. The near bankrupt council don't have the money to do it. The very real prospect now is that the harbour will be de registered and just left to deteriorate permanently.

You were saying ?

At least you don't actually deny misquoting and altering what I said, maybe it's a start...

What is the relevance of some damaged cars and graffiti nowhere near to Newport harbour or the non-existent docks? I think you're being a bit desperate now. And a link to the council phone number for reporting vandalism, every council has one of them :encouragement:

It's a good illustration of what one might expect if visiting, by boat or otherwise, not surprised you deny it; and unlike you I don't misquote; you have variously said commercial and crumbling, don't wriggle. :) Changing the context of what I said, now that is desperate.

I'm off to mix with human beings now.

Link says not found. Can you tell me what number bus goes there?

Funnily enough, there is actually a bus museum at Newport Harbour (I don't know about Newport Docks though):

http://www.iwbusmuseum.org.uk/

It can cause lots of confusion to the unwary who aren't sure where they are because there are buses up and down the quay with all different numbers and destinations on:
