If weather's good this weekend, I'm planing a trip to Cherbourg.

Should I have any problems getting a berth for a 38ft Broom if I just turn up say midday Saturday? Should I/ can I book?

I've only been to Cherboug once before and that was on an MBM Cruise in Company so I didn't have to worry about the berthing arrangements.

Chantereyne marina is pretty huge and I've never had problems finding a berth, but if you want to be certain you can phone the Capitainerie on 0033 2 33876570 or fax them on 0033 2 33 532112, or e-mail cherbourg.marina@wanadoo.fr

Hope this helps

Bill.

Cherbourg's a hole. Why dont you go to Alderney instead? Or St Vaast or Dielette if the tides are right?

Cherbourg was fairly empty when we were in there for a couple of days at the beginning of last week; well it was until we arrived mob-handed. I agree with the other post here that single boats are not normally problem (and disagree that it is a bit of a hole; it's a handy all tides one with a couple of useful restaurants that can be reached at any speed easily).

Would leave UK to be there earlyish though as there are generally more berths available just after lunchtime and before the afternoon rush. Further up towards the shore is best if an onshore breeze is blowing; less slap and tickle.

Didn't go there myself but am told by several people that the yacht club is serving food again and that it is back to old standards (ie better). The Restaurant Cafe de Paris overlooking the locked basin behind Chantereyne is also worth a visit.

Hi Martin,

So did you get to Cherbourg then? and if you did how did the trip go?

We had a Fathers day out on the boat, spent several hours at anchor up a little creek off the Medway, sunbathing, eating and drinking it was great!

Ah, we will have to excuse Deleted User who has this year dramatically recalibrated his idea of "hole".

For uk boaties, cherbourg is indeed quite plez. But for med types (where every single marina is available at all states of tide, and the cafe de paris would be the worst restaurant not the best) it is, relatively, a dump.
