Cherbourg Scuttlebutt September 2018

For those (thinking more Single Handers) that haven't been to East Cowes before, just be a little cautious of the tidal stream, should be fairly easy today but if unsure a quick call to the Marina office and someone will take your lines. Also due to the new breakwater the Red Funnel car ferry tends to stay on the Port side of the channel entering and leaving. The Folly Waterbus will be running (up to 22:30 I think)while FB6 is out of action
Tks for local info and you're not serious. FB6 bust again !!!! :)

We have decided to pass on this weekends frolics. Its still 26k+ down here in Portland so no hope of a comfortable ride to Cowes.

As soon as their is a break in the weather we will dash for Cherbourg as I have a large wine order ready for me!! With all the uncertainty of next year with the EU I want to be sure of a decent stock to see me through the drama.

Have fun guys and be careful on your way there and returning for home.

East Cowes marina has acknowledged receipt of the list of boat names I sent them last night.

Call them on Ch 80 when close for berthing instructions. (And I will try to listen out on that channel to help take lines. Grateful if those arriving before me could do the same).

Expect to be leaving at about 11.15 from Ocean Village. The wind here is certainly no where near as bad as talked about. Might only just use the genoa for such a short sail as I am not in a hurry, but if in the low 20's I might raise a reefed main. See you all there.

I'm impressed, more Scuttlebutters out on the water than any others!! :encouragement:

Can almost see the white knuckles! :D

Have a good time guys.

Sorry for the late notice but we're the latest of the Portland contingent to bail out.

We're braving tomorrow's rain to head for a few beers and Indian in lieu of vin and French, so we'll raise a glass to you all in absentia.

Lol.

Yes, 5 boats have made it so far. We have Concerto, DJE, Chubby, Dom and Angele.

Expecting a couple more later this afternoon. Table booked in The Lifeboat for 8pm.

We're leaving tomorrow morning, but intending to do a bit of sailing during the day rather than just travelling direct from Southampton to Cowes. What sort of time might it make sense for us to arrive at the Folly pontoons, do you think?

Pete

Thank you to those who made it to E Cowes and the Lifeboat last night - Enjoyed it all and very generous hospitality on David's yacht. 'Champasak'

Completely agree, East Cowes was interesting having never visited before and the food at the Lifeboat was good, I hope the visit to the Folly was as good.

It was great to meet up with some of the characters off here and again thanks must go to the generous hospitality on Davids yacht.

Bit of a late night on Sea Reach on Friday. I'm sure we put the world to rights but nobody seems to remember the details. I hope Saturday went as well.

The sky is brightening up as forecast, a brisk northerly so planning to escape from the folly and pay homage to Lord Montagu by sheltering in his river before Portsmouth tomorrow hoping the sun will appear, thanks for everyone's company unless anyone else follows me back to the mainland

Both days have been very enjoyable and meeting other forum members has been wonderful. Being from the East Coast, not the South Coast, I have been made extremely welcome and would recommend others to join in next year.

My journey is continuing to Cherbourg in about an hour, but I do understand the sound reason for the change of venue as the wind would have made it very difficult for anyone to return for work on Monday.

I shall be sailing overnight for better winds as they are due to go light in the morning. The thought of sailing in a lumpy sea with light winds does not appeal. My planning should be to keep the tide down to the Needles and then arrive in Cherbourg at dawn with slack water. However I might sail a bit faster than planned with the current wind.
