Do you mean between the nearest bridge support (in the pic) and the bank? brave man, watch out for submerged trees! I was hit by a submerged tree there once while I was tied up to the pontoon.

1/2 tide was ok. 3ft fin keel. Photo is a bit deceptive perhaps someone from the Chepstow boat club could update us with the latest pilotage?

I think a safer bet could be visit St Pierre and take the folding bike for a pedal over to Chepstow.

I definitely dont fancy the idea of drying out on the pontoon by the Boat inn for reasons outlined by Morpheus. Banjo doesnt have side decks, the cabin goes out to the sides which could be vulnerable to a leaning pontoon with hand rails.

Also as a visitor I wouldnt fancy negotiating the bridge at half tide with the flood at its strongest.

Im sure it is all possible by someone braver than me .

There are quay walls along stretch of the river on the seaward side of the bridge, some are actually used by a barge that loads up with 'stuff' but I think there is room. Not sure if they are private though or if there is mud. If you specifically want to sit in mud try Watchet harbour :D

I've just been looking on Google Earth. The area where the barge loads it's "stuff" looks decidedly unappealing. And passing the bridge is definitely out as the clearance is 4.0m. It's a shame because I quite fancied giving Chepstow a go. It all seems a bit pointless if all we do is burble up the river and turn round and go straight back though. Maybe Morpheous could come back down under the bridge with a couple of pints and a packet of crisps for us.

Havent looked at the chart but it has to be more than 4m because I sailed under it ( Brunels bridge that it) with mast up in a 9 metre boat. Mind you, you wont get under the town bridge with any mast.

Is there a speed limit in the river?
Like the 9 kts the Avon on the approach to Bristol.
I have been up there once and would love to do it at 25 kts if allowed. :)

It used to be about 4/5 knots by the moorings but you could open up up from the wye bridge / winters leap and the castle - used to water ski up there !

Cheers

Talking about this with a colleague and he recalls sailing to Chepstow, under motor at the bridge and he recalled 2 mtrs depth and 15.84mtrs or 52 ft air draft............this was a few years ago though.

Not the Avon but river ely in cardiff is fun going fast. There is a speed limit now but sure you can do it at some point.Took one of ours up there at about 60knts. Loads of bends. Go slow at the bit where there is a creek....there are loads of terrapins , assuming they are still there.
Good place for a bbq just further up.Depth gets a bit dodgy further up.If your unsure i'll take you up there.
