Does anyone know if theres a suitable place for a finkeel boat to dry out in mud against a pontoon or wall for easy access to pub etc over low water?

St Pierre Pill ( ie CDYC) is on the edge of a farm so the route to the pub is across fields and about half a mile. Can be very muddy.

I wouldnt take my boat up the river into Chepstow top go to the pub. The river is very steep sided and flows very quickly even by BC standards. It's a "local knowledge" place at best.

Its walkable! You can sit in the mud on the Pontoon at CDYC providing your keel is no more than 9ft! A line from the mast to the pontoon as a precaution, but no yacht has fallen over as far as I know.pm me if you wish.

There is still a pontoon by the bridge, I think the pub is called "The Boat". It does dry but I've no idea how deep the mud is, I am firmly a "full" river man.
Who, Furball or Morpheus go there quite a bit I'm sure one of them will be along soon to enlighten .
Why Chepstow? Just 'cos it's somewhere new?

Thanks for the replies. I have visited St Pierre a few times but never been up the river to Chepstow.

It is fine to get to Chepstow and you will have time for a quick drink. Yachts are moored in the river opposite the pub so you may be able to overnight there. Sugest you contact Chepstow boat club for information.
We were there today from CDYC, no wind so just drifted and as it is neaps we allowed ourselves to be drifted into the Wye. Put the engine on tickover and made the Rail and road Bridge before heading back in the torrential rain. 6knots on the way back still on tickover!
On reaching the Wye Bridge we could have a sail, still at 6knots with the engine off!.

The Boat Inn is by the pontoon, also used to be a very nice resturant just along the river and the Bridge Inn was over by the Wye road bridge.

It is not that bad actually! The ground drains quite well, theres a puddle between the gate and most likely visitor will be welly clad so not really a problem. I have heard that the food at theMillers Arms has improved and that they are now doing Take Away fish suppers!

I confess the walk is far better around June to September.

CDYC has gone upmarket if you sail with a DJ on board. For that matter, so have you! :D

Of course not, just trying to show how he can get himself into St Pierre Golf Club bars!

On the other hand, we could arrange for some beers to be brought down to the Pontoon as part of our generous hospitality! Weekends only though.

Sorry to be late on this one - chepstow is a regular visiting spot for us - yes there is a pontoon outside the Boat Inn, run by the Chepstow boat club. Visitors can use it, just make a contribution in the tin behind the bar.

However I would not recommend drying out a fin keeler on the pontoon for 2 reasons:
1. The banks of the river are very steep, the pontoon has railings, it ends up at something like 45 degrees with the railings then leaning on the side of your boat.
2. Fin keeler suggests rag & stick - will the stick get under bridge? Not at HW!

Inside passage at certain times is doable.
