Checking the valves on a D2-55 Volvo

Not too many car engines have raw water pumps.
So the convention only applies to car engines ?
However
the cylinders were numbered from the transmission end on the Peugeot I used to own. The water pump was driven by timing belt at the other end but I suppose it was French ....... I wonder which way they are numbered on the Renult I have now.

Never heard of a Renult.
