Check your EHIC card expiry date

We had a similar experience when there in 2012. Wife had to have treatment & xrays.
All gratis. No mention of a EHIC. May be they felt sorry for us as we had been storm bound for neatly three weeks lol.

There wouldn't be any mention of EHIC, and even if there had been, it wouldn't have done you any good. The CI's, IoM, Gib are all outside the EHIC area, which is EEA plus Switzerland.
As you surmise, the medics were simply being kindly.
 
can you still renew if you have lost the old one and don`t have the number? the online site wants your NI or NHS number, easy but also the number on the previous one?

Many thanks to the OP. New card received today. I also came across the 'other' site and read further when I noticed a fee was involved. In fairness that site did explain you could get it for free but I suspect a lot of people don't read the detail.
 
But the only reason these "alternative" sites exist is to rip off the gullible/inexperienced public. In my view they should not be allowed to operate. No personal axe to grind, I have always used the official HMG sites and generally they work very well - with the exception I gather of HMR&C!
 
I got duped 2 yrs ago on a very look alike DVLA tax site, this site was taken down but cost me £20 or 30 squids .
It had all the right icons & was very convincing indeed, i should have noticed as it asked me questions that DVLA already knew

I notice that Duckduckgo now have an "official site " icon highlighted
