I'm fed up with the real cheapy tarps from B&Q. I've shredded 2 already this winter and am looking around for something heavier. I don't really care what it looks like as long as it stays on the boat but don't want to pay the earth for a proper made to measure cover.

Any ideas on where to get one in the Portsmouth area?

...oops seem to have posted twice.

If you can`t find one in your area mail me. I have a heavy duty marquee material quality cover surplus to requirements. Used for 26 footer, Based in Gloucestershire

Costco - 30' x 15' DOUBLE thickness, blue one side/silver the other, very strong eylet points, £12!

but it was a while ago. So, as suggested, I would go to builders merchants

We use a cover off a truck trailer

[/ QUOTE ] I had a cover that was made from that material by a local firm who made covers for lorries. It was absolutely gale proof and lasted for over 25 years. I could do with another but they don't do that sort of work now.

The current weather, F9 gusting 11 at Chichester bar when a looked a few minutes ago, will make short work of all the woven polythene ones and the Monotex ones

I used Monarflex up in East Anglia where the only thing that stops the wind is oneself standing in it. It worked well. You can buy it off the roll in various widths, it is often used to protect the public from debris and the workers from weather on scaffolds - has patches welded in for piercing for rope ties.

Try your local scaffolders!

Don't buy cheap tarps. It is cheaper in the long run to get heavy PVC sheets made from the same material as curtain sided lorries use. I have bought them for boat and building site work and they last for ever also they don't flap around like a paper bag in the wind.

Try http://www.tarpaulinsdirect.co.uk I've been using them for several years. I use the top grade, reasonably priced. I always lash a length of nicely rounded 2"x1" along the top of the stanchions and replace the boom with a length of rounded 4"x2". Also add extra eyelets in between each of the fitted ones, also supplied by them, they are snap together type. If the 4x2 is long add an extra support in the centre. Make sure you use plenty of lashing ropes and check frequently to take up any slack.
The secret is to make sure that everything is nicely rounded to prevent chafe and wear. Mine last about 4/5 years before they get relegated to garden duty.
Saying all that - I hope it's alright after today's gales..............
They also do the Monotex as mentioned by others.
PS - get the white ones and there is plenty of light to work under.

Could you post details of where this material can be purchased. Do they list in Yellow Pages and under what heading? Can it be made to measure or do you buy it off the roll and then have to get it made up by a cover maker? What sort of fixings does yours have for the lashing lines, as these are often the weak points in any cover?
