Including IoW.

May have the chance to obtain a small cheap cat, would be great to keep it somewhere in the Solent for minimal cost.

Quay Lane have tidal moorings that might be suitable from £572. However, there's a question mark over the level of maintenance of their moorings; I know of a few boats whose moorings broke loose during storms recently. Not an issue if you keep an eye on things, but I wouldn't assume that they are.

If you do go there, join Hardway Sailing Club. It's a friendly place with good facilities and a cheap bar. You may even live long enough to get a club mooring, which will be even cheaper :)

We spent a few years moored at Dell Quay, Chichester Harbour (the boatyard moorings, not sailing club)... although this is now 9 years ago, I see their current rates are still good on their website.... £570 for a half tide mooring. We loved it there, very relaxed, easy to park, load up your tender on trolley (which you can leave in yard at no extra cost) launch on concrete slip and good pontoon if you want to bring your boat over for extra loading etc. Yard was excellent and easy going, multi hull friendly too. Downside was you are a long way from Chi entrance if leaving the harbour, but upside is you are near to good and quiet anchorages if just bimbling about Chi Harbour. But as I said above, my info is now 9 years out of date.

Top of Portsmouth Harbour on the mainland, but on the Island, try above the bridge at Yarmouth, the top of the Medina, Ryde, and Bembridge.

We are above the bridge at Yarmouth, theres about a 20 year waiting list. Partly because a load of the cheap moorings are going, marina style finger berths are being installed there, work starts in April.

also, you have to have proof of an address on the Island to get one.

Join a club - they're always the best source for cheaper moorings, but come with the added responsibilities of any club duties they may ask for as part and parcel... try Porchester, or Tudor, or Langstone, or Eastney or Milton sailing clubs and see what comes up...

Add Marchwood to that list, a great club, people say.

Langston Harbour Board have some pretty low cost moorings. But in a high cost area be aware that there's usually a reason why moorings are cheap! Club moorings carry a commitment to do duty in the kitchen etc, for example. Other moorings may be cheap because of lack of access, short tidal window, vandalism and theft etc. Take a look at Chi harbour Conservancy websitr. They have some very cheap moorings in the less accessible parts. Also, remember a swinging moorings needs a dinghy and somewhere to keep it. That can add significantly to the cost. Most Solent drying moorings are in deep soft mud, so no access at LW.

Try Thornham marina in Emsworth or just checkout the Chi Harbour's list - they're usually good value for drying moorings. I had one right near the slip in Emsworth - could just about walk out to it at LW and launch the inflatable on the slip at HW+/- 2h.

Be aware that if using moorings up the Thorney channel off Thornham marina or say off Portchester near port Solent there is a risk of landing up aground on the beach in bad /windy weather. I have seen the entire mooring and boat ashore at Prinstead for example .

That’s not a disaster for a small cat.

Which is why you should check the state of your mooring chain and strop regularly. That risk isn't confined to the east side - last year, a storm sent a couple of boats from the western side across. One ended up sinking near the Brittany Ferries terminal with a large bill for urgent salvage, the other bounced off a couple of other boats on its jaunt, effectively writing itself off and doing expensive damage to another boat.

This is true of any swinging mooring, and far from unique to the Prinsted Channel where I was for 15 years. if the ground tackle fails through lack of maintenance, poor design, or an undersize sinker, then sooner or later your pride and joy will go of for a jolly by itself. Last time it happened to me 30 years ago, I had advised the yard the riser was worn, but before they could deal with it a bad gale snapped it.

The important thing is what is downwind from your mooring? I was lucky, and ended up on saltings, and the next big tide we were able to pull her off = lots of red faces at the yard! Recovery and repairs free because i had warned them of the problem!

But its a different story if there is a sea wall, rock bund or wharf for your boat to get against. Invariably the boat loses and can be completely smashed up. This is what happens at Prinsted where there is a rock bund which will take out anything that gets thrown up on it. One recent casualty had just a single railway whee for a sinker and a short riser. The boat (a macwester 26) had lifted the whole lot and dragged it up on to the rocks. Once an underweight sinker is uprooted from the mud it will not reset, and just slides over the mud. Another Prinstead casualty had a badly worn mooring chain with little more strength than a piece of string. That one was completely smashed up.

Fareham saiing club at Fareham Creek are an excellent club with trot moorings normally available. It is very sheltered up there and boats are fine overwinter too. A good club house & bar and a very good bunch of members. Membership fees and mooring charges are as low as it gets. Worth considering.
