cheaper large instrument displays - mast mount

Everything Seatalk that I can test without going out for a sail and setting up a route on my chart plotter is now working with the exception of Velocity Made Good upwind. I thought that this was a Seatalk message, but according to Thomas Knauf it isn't and has to be calculated from the other raw data.

My chart plotter can also show VMG towards the next waypoint, which again needs calculating from distance and direction to waypoint, boat speed and heading. If anyone wants to volunteer to do the trig and post some equations...

The Seatalk backlight level is working too - change the Lamps value on one of the instruments and it changes the back light level on the mast display. Not the other way round though, i.e. changing mast display back light changing the instruments.

Just wanted to say that i didn't get very far with my 3D printer man. The technology he had at his disposal wasn't that sophisticated (or as sophisticated as I believe we need). The tolerances he was promising was a bit too much "barn-door" for my liking, so I've come a bit stuck.

Is anybody else getting on any better?

I hope not - I've been following this thread with wonder and admiration. While not being able to contribute to date, I was looking forward to the construction of the 'finished' product. With a background in production engineering, I was hoping to get back to work with the pcb layout. That is unless someone more qualified had beaten me to it.
 
Software for display and remote handset pretty much complete, apart from power optimisation on the display.

Hardware design pretty much complete, apart from drawing the display schematic. Remote schematic done. Need to choose a voltage regulator as I've learned recently that there are ones specially designed for automotive type charging systems which can survive voltage spikes.

No PCB layout done.

The biggest stumbling block is the case. Shaun is no longer posting.

Latest software builds and details on how to put one together are available to anyone who wants the information.

Yep, shame Shaun has dissapeared?
Anybody any leads for casing manufacture?
 
Would be a real pity if this fantastic project had come to an end. I've been following from the beginning and was (and still am) really excited. Shame that I don't have any of the technical skills to contribute to the project. If it does lead to a finished mast display, I would definitely buy one or two.

Would it be worth having some sort of poll to see about how many mast displays may be required. It would give me and anyone else, looking to source a case some idea of the possible volume. I think I can find a home for four.

One technical question. Is the power consumption low enough for the finished display work off internal batteries?
