Around 1989 I bought a very cheap set of 6ft oars. They seemed to be made of grey plastic "drainpipe" with bright orange blade and handpiece. Tough, totally maintenance free, splendidly balanced and sufficiently naff looking never to be pinched. Unfortunately they were in my dinghy which was pinched! Anyone know of a source for something similar?

Ah, happy days

Fond (but blurred) memories of the Texas bar (and the Liverpool bar) when "Discovery" used to call in there in the eighties. And the Florida bar in Rio. Same language, same trade(s), I'll bet neither has changed much.

Just found this old post while looking for the sedneth luanda, I helped build soyo camp in the late 70s, used to pick the crew change up with the little boat from the mouth of the river congo and transfer to soyo for the DC3 and then the Fokker F27 for the trip to luanda. Later on it was me in the chevvy that would take you to the airstrip. Names from the past, Okee, texaco toolpusher, the medic, derek (maybe on the 135g?) the other one was? he came to work for us eventually. KC Henry the texaco drilling superintendent, good old days

Off topic!

Most extreme example of thread hijacking i've ever seen! Not one reply on topic. However, the OP has to take some responsibility with his poor spelling in the topic title!

I thought this rang bells - gaudy plastic oars. yes I'm sure I dimly remember... Then I went to pick up the post and realised it was the description of the snow shovel standing in the porch! Its the short-term memory that goes first..

Yeah but what about the Texas bar in Lisbon!
The Sedco jocks used to change planes in Lisbon for Luanda, it was a night stop, they soon discovered the Texas bar, yop notch knocking shop! A quick sha g before a month on the Sedneth Luanda jackup or Sedco 135G semi sub. They inevitably caught the clap, the medic (Angus or Derek?) would apply his magic needle and bobs your uncle before they went home. Unfortunately Sedco got piss ed off with the cost of the antibiotics and told them, no more if they caught the clap. Then the early eighties arrived and the realisation that they were in the midst of an area where AIDS was rife, it concentrated their minds somewhat!
A bit more of fred drift, I remember one of the boys was caught with a narcotic substance in Luanda, (not as daft as they looked those guys in Luanda airport) He went straight to the pokey, not a place to be!
Again a mind concentrator!
