Musing about taking Bethfran to Ireland next year and then exploring the sw coast with 1 and 2 week stretches.
Just wondering if anyone has any idea of the costs of leaving a small boat in harbours/marinas etc over there for weeks at a time.

Kinsale. Cracking run ashore and 'The Spaniard'.

I was once on an oil rig from which we were evacuated to there due to weather.
For a memorable time, I can't understand why my memory's so patchy?

Quite a large marina set-up also IIRC.

But not cheap. The Yacht Club runs the marina IIRC from our last visit.

A chat with the Harbourmasters at Dunmore East, Kilmore Quay and Cork might find out some options.

Good luck.

Waterford 'marina' - i.e. pontoons in the middle of town - are not expensive by normal marina standards (but don't tell them I said that). Shelter is good in winter. You are also pretty near a good boat yard in New Ross (just up the Barrow - swing bridge is available whenever you need it).

Dunmore East is 2 hours down the river (with the tide, that is) but really wouldn't be suitable longer term in the winter months.

Kinsale is an ideal spot to base yourself if you want to cruise the beautiful West Cost and Kerry coast. It’s also very close to Cork Airport so easy access. Castlepark Marina is another option in Kinsale but it’s a bit out of town. The yacht club marina is a great location. West of Kinsale there are no real marinas until you get to Bantry or Lawrence Cove. In Baltimore you might be able to get a swing mooring for a longer stay. The pontoon can only accommodate 4-10 boats.
The cruising is fab in the area. Baltimore, Schull, Crookhaven and around to Bantry Bay.
Dingle is another option and is close to Farranfore/Kerry airport. Kilrush is a good option too if you want to move base a bit. It’s close enough to Shannon airport.
www.eoceanic.com is great for information

I just spent the summer poking around here. Very happy with Lawrence Cove marina (Bere Island, in Bantry Bay). Lovely couple run it & when the time came to pay the bill, Racheal seemed to find any excuse to take extras off the bill, it was almost embarrassing.

My boat is now over-wintering at Kilrush, on the Shannon. Very nice little marina there, helpful staff, good facilities, safe as houses inside the sea-lock and pretty reasonable - around 1500 Euros for 6 months for my 37' boat.

Oh yeah, forgot DIngle. Also good and cheap - I paid 20 Euros a night - you can't get a buoy for that in the SW UK!

Just don't believe the chart if you go to Kilrush - that "least depth 2.5m" in the approach channel is far from the truth - my first grounding!

I think you are over planning this Steve. The S W of Ireland has dozens of shelterered bays and anchorages with loads of moorings, some in use and some not. Someone with your charm and humility asking in the pub will be offered a solution, Bethfran is not a big boat, a suitable corner will be found, the folk there regard themselves as the most hospitable in the world and take the promotion of that reputation very seriously.
Just go, everything will fall in to place and you will enjoy it so much that you will want to stay.

I like this idea, a lot, as it's what I did last time in Scotland. But charm and humility???? that's gotta be sarcasm :) :)

Anywhere you would say is a don't miss?

Agree with all the above, Valentia Marine is another great option in SW Kerry, great boatyard and nearby marinas, they now liftout Severn Class lifeboats, our largest

Yep, I think the humility might be an exaggeration?
Cork harbour is massive and intricate, a destination in itself, Kinsale is sophisticated and deliberately photogenic, great pubs and restaurants but pricy and a lower proportion of natives than most, but a harbour not to be missed, after that going west you can not go wrong, loads of great villages and harbours I have never been in, those I have and liked, Castletownshend, Schull, Crookhaven, Glengariff , Bantry Bay (Adrigole) is very atmospheric in poor weather with dramatic mountain shoreline to the north. Castletownbear is a proper fishing port, the opposite of Kinsale, Dursey Island is liinked by a glorified breeches buoy, wee cable car. Further north (Kerry) I have only explored by motorbike with a tent so ignorant of harbour qualities. A long time ago, but if Sullivan's in Crookhaven has not changed that would be my 'don't miss.' though Mary Anns? in Castletownshend was good but probably overrun with tourists now.
It would be an awful waste to go to West Cork or Kerry during lockdown so wait until it is over.

O’Sullivans in Crookhaven is still a fab spot. I spent a lovely evening there last year in July. Sat outside chatting to Billy O’Sullivan for the evening. A true gent and a legend. His way of greeting us was to walk up to us, say hello, rummage in is pocket for a €20 note, then he threw it on the table and told us to get him a glass of red and whatever we are having ourselves.
Bantry is worth a visit with its new 20 berth marina very close to the thriving town. Glengarriff and Garnish Island are not to be missed.
