Cheap moorings

Morning all! We've had an offer accepted on a 12m Broom, getting it surveyed today so fingers crossed it'll be ours tomorrow - so excited..... anyway, anyone know where we can keep it on the South Coast / Thames / Kent / Essex / East Anglia kind of area where it will be cheap - for about 5 weeks. Average daily prices seem to be about £25 per night - so something cheaper than that! It doesn't have to be a posh Marina - just somewhere to keep it safe. Thanks.

Hi Marina

Glad to see you got yourself a boat - congratulations. You won't regret it, I'm sure.

You might want to think about where your first port of call is going to be when you eventually set off on your much envied trip.

If you put her on the East Coast somewhere with the intention of going over to say France initially, then you're going to spend quite a bit on fuel getting down to the South Coast first.

Any savings you make in mooring fees will be replaced by extra fuel cost.

If you're going to France first, then I'd definitely suggest mooring on the South Coast.

You could try the Medway Kent, Medway Bridge marina (Rochester) on the river, the new Chatham Maritime Marina, Hoo Marina (Tidal) or Gillingham Marina all within 1 hour from london

You could always try mooring off Eel Pie Island, Twickenham. I'm puting a 24 footer there tomorrow for £9/week. On a bouy but very sporran-friendly and I would think fairly secure. Sandy Scott at Lion Boatyard - 020 8891 1025. You've got to shout 'cause he's getting a bit deaf!

What a sweet and helpful guy Sandy Scott is - and I did have to shout! He can only take maximum of 30ft (our boat will hopefully be 39ft) so I've been given some other numbers for bigger boats near there and will post my findings. Thanks.

Hope the B 12M does not have borgwarner gearboxes, with Mermaid engines as they give problems, basically the starboard box contrarotating gears are not up to the torque and weight of a heavy boat, you will need to fit different boxes, PM me if this is the case and I will fill you in, before sat as im of to the states.

Hi,

I moor in Hoo Marina on the Medway. It is Tidal, the window is about two hours before high water until two hours after. I think the rates are quite good, price per annum for your boat would be about £5.50 per night. £170 a month. inc vat. They are a friendly lot but most are the rag and stick brigade! having said that the marina manager has a motor boat and is very pro motor cruisers! They have the best hard standing around for miles! If you cruise at around twenty knots its only a few hours along the south coast to all the expensive marinas! so give it a try! Ramsgate is a little more expensive, but it will be a sea trip every time you leave the marina. At least with Hoo you can potter about on a Sunday with the relatives without worrying to much about navigation! If you decide to give it a try ring Mark the manager on 01634 250311 Tell him Barry Winnett recommended you and with any luck I will get a reduction!!!!! lol. Mines the Birchwood 37. Philae.

Well done on buying the 12m Broom - but if you already need to save money, then you won;'t keep the boat long!!!

With two (three if you count the tender) boats in the family, I can assure you (as if you need it) that the prchase price is just the down-payment. The wallet-ectomy follows soon after!

LOL - we've been warned that boating will be just like sitting down to dinner and pouring olive oil over £50 notes and munching them enthusiastically! Oh well - anyone want to rent a 1 bed flat in Brunswick Quay SE16 to help us on our way? Hope you all had great weekends - mine was spent doing a first aid course so now I can help heart attack victims and anyone who has been machine gunned (our tutor was a marine!)
