Paean and I are going to see if we have what it takes to complete this years Jester challenge. Due to needing to be at home while youngest does his A-Levels, I am going to sail Paean down to Plymouth, arriving around the 1st June and then get the train home, returning on the 16th June, ready to set off for Ireland on Sunday.

Can anyone recommend where I can leave Paean that is sheltered, safe and cheap?

Many thanks,

Phill

Cargreen YC, where we are moored, will more than likely fit you in, contact the moorings officer via the website or the club facebook page or PM me if you get stuck. It’s a bit out of the way up the Tamar and you’ll need to get a taxi to the station (Saltash is 4 miles away, Plymouth about twice that) but it’s peaceful, quiet, sheltered and very cheap. If you want somewhere a bit closer to the city action but not a marina then try Saltash SC or Tamar River SC. Of the marina’s I can highly recommend Plymouth Yacht Haven where we berthed for 2 years but it will of course be much more expensive for the convenience and facilities.

Another alternative, just upstream from Cargreen is Weir Quay; more expensive but good facilities and people. It's on the east bank of the Tamar so access without car not so easy. You could get taxi to Bere Ferrers where there is a station - or 30 minute brisk walk.

If you aren't successful in finding a club mooring or the like then the Huggins crowd should be able to find you a mooring just downstream of the ferries on the Torpoint shore.

Regular bus services into Plymouth

I have done exactly this - am currently with Huggins chaps at their Torpoint Marina with my 8m boat, it's right next to the chain ferry (free on foot) to Plymouth proper on the other side, short walk then to rail station, or take the bus into town. Marina is not posh or fancy, but I've found them very helpful and accomodating, usefully cheaper than the big and greedy multi marina companies. Only a couple of pontoon berths for visitors, but they do also have swinging moorings there too & with an hourly (free) water taxi between 0900 and 2100.
