As I understand it, microwaves have a 'start-up' power demand which is somewhere in the order of twice the stated power. So a 1000 watt inverter won't hack it. We have an 800 watt microwave and a 2000 watt inverter but notice that cooking is very much slower when running on the inverter.

I think if you were to check the plat eon the back, you would need 1200 or more watts. I have been looking for one for ages to plug into my generator, but not found one. If this is 800, please let me know nad I will get one.

I agree, you'll need 1800 watts min, I have a 800 watt micro, which needs an inverter that size.

too expensive. I have a 1,000 watt gennie, but have not been able to find one in any of the cheap electricall bits of shops, e.g Currys, Asda, Tesco. All seem as it was mentioned to require that initial burst of well over 1,000 watts. Some look like low power but you have to look at the label on the back to make sure.

Sometimes the microwave won't work properly even if you have enough watts, a microwave requires an AC sinewave input, many inverters only supply a simulated sinewave which is in fact a squarewave at 50hz, ok for most AC appliances, but not microwaves.

I thought I'd seen some cheap ones (12v) somewhere, being on offer or whatever, wish I could remember where. i agree about the wattage, a 1000 watt genny, just doesn't do it.
