Cheap fuel filter elements

I know it's been asked a zillion times before but where's the cheapest place to buy fuel filter elements? Mines a tiny Crossland 489. Cheapest on ebay is £5.50

Once you find a cross-reference list with your "original" on it - you're sorted. Just search for one of the better known alternative manufacturers numbers on Ebay.. or just google?
I don't pick the absolutely cheapest... but it's better value than the swindlery generally!

Well....

I did once see a filter housing which was designed to take a whole standard-sized kitchen roll. The idea was that you'd use it as a pre-filter to catch the bulk of the crud, prolonging the life of the "real" filters downstream. Replacement "cartridges" available very cheaply almost anywhere in the world :)

Ingenious. I assume that the fuel entered at one end and made its way to the other by flowing along the multiple paper interfaces - just as in a car petrol filter that I once cut open to examine.
 
I get mine from ASAP but they are Racor and are not cheap. The way I look on it is, with the cost of owning a boat and the importance of having a working engine when you need it, a few quid on a decent filter is money well spent.
 
Sorry, Albineer, I should have been more specific, I meant the engine mounted fuel filter. My MD1 doesn't have an oil filter, it has an oil strainer which filters the lumps out of it. I've been exploring 'inline filters' and think I may have found something but it's still pretty pricey.

Be very careful with cheap fuel filters they don't have a pressure relief valve that activates if the filter gets blocked. Look inside filter and see if there is a spring in there if there isn't don't touch it. Also it's best to buy filters with a clear bowl on the bottom so you can see if you start getting dirt in the bottom, we had Racors.

If the fuel supply is dirty and has blocked the filter, why would I want a valve to open and let the dirty fuel into my engine?

Hopefully I would have noticed the problem building on the vacuum gauge, but if not I then want to hear the engine start to struggle and lose revs, so that I can go and quickly switch over to my standby filter. I do not want to be having to buy a new injector pump.

Bypass valves make sense on oil filters, where it's better to stop cleaning the oil than to run dry and seize up.

I was enquiring about fuel filter elements. As far as I can see, they're just made of paper!
