My cable tie marks work perfectly (unless I have the dingy at the bow) so it’s not a “must have” but only a “nice to have” little gadget. So, are there any cheap, China/Ebay category (!) chain counters around?

A chain counter consists of a tiny magnet glued to the gypsy and a small sensor that detects when said magnet rotates past it. Then you work out how many cm of chain a turn of your gypsy is and multiply. Feel free to add fancy stuff such as a display, wifi, bluetooth or NMEA to suit your needs. A basic one should cost around €10 if you make it yourself.

Or search for a magnetic digital turn counter. Something like this: 7.03US $ 12% OFF|Digital electronic counter punch magnetic induction proximity switch reciprocating rotary counter 5 digital|counter pulse|counter tachometerswitch map - AliExpress

You'll have to figure out if it can count in reverse and you'll probably have to multiply in your head unless you can find one with a configurable multiplier to convert turns to meters. There's probably something that does this job, now that you know what to search for :)
