Have just read the article in MBM regarding Broom 39 - Calm Voyager. I would be very interested as to where you can obtain insurance for a £280K boat for £900, especially the commercial type use that goes with Calm Voyager. Also, servicing and anti-fouling for £663 ?? especially as the boat has done over 400 hours.

Can anybody enlighten me or maybe this is one for MBM ??

Alan,

In reply to your question:

We do not hold a single policy for this craft, rather we have a corporate
policy which covers many different boats including Calm Voyager.
On this basis, we used our findings in our insurance feature from Jan 04 to quote for a "typical" premium for this kind of boat.
In that feature we asked 10 different insurance companies to quote for a Broom 38cl with a value of £200k used for non tidal and tidal by an owner of 15 years experience and coastal skipper qualification with 10 years no claims history.

The premiums quoted ranged from £819 to £1472 per annum with 8 of the 10 being £1000 or less.

As the feature's aim is to show the costs of ownership are likely to be for any potential owner, this seemed a better way of quoting for insurance rather than saying: We pay £xxxx pounds for a corporate policy which covers numerous IPC owned or leased boats and also any boats any of the magazines have on test blah blah blah. This would have meant nothing to anyone else and would have given no reflection of ownership costs of a private individual.

The figure for servicing and antifouling represented the amount that we have spent since taking ownership. The reality is that we have not had the boat antifouled and the heading maybe should have been changed from the normal to reflect this. As for servicing. We have, up to the time of writing, only had one service carried out and. This was at around 250hours, the service before being carried out before we took delivery with some hours already clocked as a demo boat and the next service due any time. As such the annual cost heading should also perhaps have been changed as we were really only talking about 6 months of ownership for these figures.

Hope this helps and apologies for any confusion.

Neale
