Cheap boat Anyone ?

Yep , Jack and Hazel Prior and their son Jonathan.

I got on well with Jonathan , he introduced me to acid house music.

ACCIIIDDD! lol. I remember them as well.

I'm just having trouble remembering boat names, must be my old age. :o

I am sure I can think of some other embarrassing things, not sure I want to reveal them here :D

Yes, Kays Venture is at Bray now.

Hi, my first post and I thought I'd resurrect this thread! My dad bought Kays Venture on the listed ebay auction and she's now at Conyer, in Kent. Lot of work has been done as she was in a very sorry state. All decks have been lifted, with all requiring replacement, including lots of supporting timbers. The flybridge has been rebuilt, and I've lost count of the number of bodge jobs we've found on the way! However, my dad viewed the boat prior to bidding and new all this. He just couldn't let a classic boat slip into an even worse state of repair!
We would love to hear from anyone who previously knew the boat, and pictures would be even better! If anyone is interested I can post some pictures of the work over the last year.
Cheers,
Nick

Here's a couple pictures of the work, as you can see it's been pretty extensive.

This is the aft cabin, with all rotten deck and beams removed.

Rebuilt and still covered, waiting for finishing.

Keep this thread updated with progress. I'm fascinated to see the work your dad's doing to bring this boat back to how it should be.

Always nice to see people with the determination/money/skills/insanity or whatever to keep these boats alive. Kaye and Vic would be well chuffed.

Thanks! It's taken hundreds of hours to get to where it is now. My dad is very fortunate to know a very good shipwright, but he's in demand so has to fit Kays Venture in when he can. I've done most of the other work, getting the wiring back into shape and everything working as it should. There's still so much to do, and pretty much a complete internal refit once the decks are finished. When it rained you wouldn't believe the rivers running into the boat before! He's aiming to finish by next summer and then we can plan a decent trip in her. I had a book printed for him of part one of the restoration, but we would love to put a good history of the boat together. If anyone knows her past or has pictures I would love to hear/see them. I can then add them into books two and probably three by the time she's done!

Boat looking really nice.

From the original advert......

"The hull, above and below the waterline, was completly stripped, repaired where necessary, resealed (and enamel glossed above water) by a prestigious boatyard in September 2009........ generally good condition........ a number of fixing, enhancement and cosmetic projects on the current DIY job list.
............ superstructure and deck 'routine " maintenance is also still to be done.

Bloke describing the boat was obviously an Estate Agent in previous life.

Just a bit! But then if replacing the decks and supporting beams is part of your 'routine maintenance' then maybe not! My dad said the seller was a very nice guy and obviously enthusiastic about the boat, just maybe his heart was in the right place but his skills elsewhere? I think a couple more winters and it would've been a very different story.

The info on the Bates StarCraft website is very sketchy. Might be worth contacting Bates themselves to see if they can provide any more info. I know work was done on her at Michael Dennetts yard at Chertsey. Michael or his son Steve could perhaps advise exactly what they did. Certainly the flybridge was re-built by them at one time but I'm sure she's been there more than once. You could also try Penton Hook Yacht Club where Vic and Kaye Penning were members for some years. One of the long-standing members there might have info or pictures, perhaps from a club run.

One small anecdote. When Dennetts re-built the flybridge for Vic they re-connected the engines controls the wrong way round so the starboard control did the port engine and vice versa. Leaving Dennetts slow ahead on both the problem wasn't apparent until he came to moor up back in Penton Hook. Made for a very interesting few minutes :D

Thanks for the tips, I'll do that. The control cabling is very good and well routed, and the right way around now! That must've caused some confusion!! The only controls that worked from the flybridge was the port engine throttles and the wheel! Now she starts, steers, throttles correctly, with all gauges, except a faulty voltmeter, working as they should. The wiring is causing an issue, I'll post a picture later so you'll get an idea of the mess it's in.

I'll try this from my phone. If there's no picture I'll fix it when I get to my notepad. It should show the main area of electrics. A lot of this is probably not connected, but we can't trace it all until we can clear the saloon and get all the floors up. A few hours with a multimeter and some new wiring and connectors should hopefully have it sorted.

and the rest! Luckily it's only the 12v lighting circuit. If it was the mains ring I would've advised getting it replaced before switching anything on!

Sorry for the thread drift, will make this the last one!

Actually this may be the last one - before the unofficial moderator gives us detention!

Who remembers Carla & Cannon V, I loved that boat.
Also the lovely Bert & Doris from Ellesay. I used to moor on the same pontoon. Still got the same boat.

I also remember Samantha Lukey. She used to walk past when I was working on my Seamaster 25 in the yard. Got a wavey water line :-) Happy days!
