Doesn't seem to make much difference, it's a shame the pogo charger connector at the bottom isn't documented anywhere, apparently that can take more current.
I generally just turn the brightness right down for a bit on longer trips otherwise you end up sailing the plotter anyway.

Don't give up, there are good USB chargers out there. I run on max screen brightness and the battery stays at 100%. What do you mean by "it's a shame the pogo charger connector at the bottom isn't documented anywhere......*

I swapped out the old 12v cig socket for one of these and it now keeps up with the tablet at full brightness. Sailing with it at night it's still too bright even with brightness as low as it will go but a tip I picked up from one of the sailing channels is if you go into the accessibility settings and switch on colour inversion it becomes usable at night as well. I have mine clamped to the grab rail just inside the companionway with one of these music stand tablet mounts...

I've used a variety of chargers all claiming at least 2amps. The thing appears to be capable of drawing more than that. This is a Nexus 10.

There's a connector at the bottom that was intended for a dock or a clip-on fast charger. Unfortunately such things are no longer available and the port isn't documented.

I had a Nexus 7 with pogo pins, and I recall that the folk on xda-developers worked out the pins. There's a similar thread for the Nexus 10:

I haven't read it all!

I don't know whether docks were ever made, and if so whether they sell on ebay; Nexus 7 ones do.

I use a Nexus 9 - stuck on Android 7.1 but pretty good.
 
Ok I now have a Samsung TabA. £155 Black Friday deal, almost as cheap as the no name tablets on Gearbest.
I have downloaded the paid for version of OpenCPN

So, what are recommended charts for English Channel, E Coast and N France? Are the o charts good?
