Chartering in Rhodes

I will have a business meeting in Rhodes at some point in the future. Rather than booking a hotel room, I think I will charter a yacht. Does anyone have direct experience of the harbour/marina? And local charter companies?

Rhodes isn't a great place to charter most anchorages are on the north and south sides open to the northerly winds and occasional southerlies, which can switch over night. The main charter island is Kos to the north. If you want to stay in one harbour the main harbour is packed with fishing boats but I haven't visited any other harbours. The Liveaboard forum folks will know.

My only experience of the place is starting a flotilla to Turkey there in 1981. (I guess Dalaman airport was still firmly military then.)

And my only recollection of the harbour is that it was a duty-free port and we made good use of that and bought so much drink for our fortnight that the goods were delivered, together with us, back to the harbour by van.

(The effect of the bureacratic delay of getting clearance to Turkey, for which all that drink was an irresistible distraction, deserves to be forgotten!)

I also remember that we had an excursion to the Valley of the Butterflies. This is a poor-man's version of the Mexican forest where the Monarch butterflies gather in millions. As it happens, back in June I was sailing just north of Rhodes and one of the insects involved, a "Jersey Tiger Moth" alighted briefly on our bimini, though it might not have been of the distinct Rhodes sub-species.

Chartering for local sailing would not be worthwhile; there are too few places to go to. If you had a week or more to spare, a trip north takes you to some delightful places - see http://jimbsail.info/mediterranean/greece/dodecanese . And the return is usally down wind.

Living in a boat is a very expensive alternative to booking a rather nice hotel in Rhodes!
