I've heard bad things from others about Sol y Mar who are based in Denia and the Balearics and I dont think much of them either.

bad ones, loads.

Good ones should be MYBA registered, and somewhere near the top of the food chain is Campers, AFAIK.

Um, how will you sort the power issues? Or will you just stay at anchor a lot with gennies on?

Campers is one of the guys we've been considering.

The power is no problem, we can plug into anything, (as long as we have the amps) I already thought of that before we went into refit so we're having a pretty amazing power system fitted onboard at a crazy expense.

Ok.

I get the pic that Campers consider you at least as much as tother way around. These days there's nothing under 25m on their books so i suppose that's the right ballpark. On 110' boat i imagain you are 4-up fully crewed? or more? They will want to see pretty whizzy cuisine, the whole bit. I suppose that they see charter guests as "their" clients so if it's good they get repeat business, if it ain't they don't get their 20% the next year nor the year after that. Med charter market remains a bit soft post 9/11 and the weak dollar means charter is not cheap for them. You could make the point that you are a yank boat, brit crew, in th emed, which might be the ideal combination. You most def want min 1 week charters, no day stuff.

I agree 1 week should be a min in the med. I was a little concerned that maybe campers are actually too big but me dealings here in the U.S. with them have actually been very good.

they may be some of the same people - i know that some staff nip over for carib season, then med season from end april.

The Myba (?) charter contract is a key differentiator. The big guys like campers will all run with this. It essentially favours the charter company rather than the boat. Years ago, boats used to take a charter booking, but keep advertising and if a better deal arrived, they'd dump the cheaper rate charter. But with the myba contract, the boat owner signs up to the effect that come hell or high water the boat will be available ready to go and crewed betweene those dates. The penalty is that the charter co gets their 20%, and they insist on it even if "force majeur" - cos some boats were staying where they were and saying ah well, see, we've bust the engine/prop/gearbox, so heyho, no can do that charter (but secretly had others, or the owner fancied the boat themselves, etc) . With these contracts a few boats each year take a charter booking and then bust summink, can't make a charter AND have to pay 20% of the charter value to the agent, gulp. I spose it sorts out the real charter boats from the casual day charters. inother words, it's worth throwing almost anything at a problem to make the start of a charter, and it's not the sort of skipperish decision that szays hm, the best thing i think will be to call it off - cos the owner cd end up $20k dollars down PLUS still have to fix that prob...

Could lead to some dodgy decisions, if skipper knows major problems, but large financial penalties for taking time out to fix

Re: skipper v owner type decisions

um, not often, really? having a boat ready on the start line is the main requirement. Going out (eg into the teeth of a gale) is quite another - and wdn't mean any penalty - you just have to plan ahead and be there. I spose bit like a crap cricket team just has to turn up BUT no problem in praying for rain. Most med charter doesn't go very far at all - monaco to st tropez is 40ish miles...
