Mugs of tea and other beverages are strictly not allowed on my chart table.

What do you use it for then?

A chart table is invaluable for giving passengers the impression one knows what one is doing.

Upon it one should place a dog-eared, stained chart of some exotic sea area, eg The Beagle Channel, along with well-worn dividers, station pointer, rolling parallel rule, chewed pencils, books containing impressive columns of figures, etc.

By the time the passengers realise one is as clueless as they are, it will be too late for them to disembark.

I had a picture of a road atlas on my chart table along with various suitable other bits. Seemed to show the Solent in enough detail

Edit - OS maps seem to have more detail ....

Err its a chart table stupid the clue is in the name so charts oh and pilot books and the log book.

You just have to be caught in a squall and not reef, and the bottom picture will become the top picture.

You will have some cleaning up to do on the floor though.

That must've been a hella rough passage. Was this from Darwin to Johannesburg?

almost imposable to sail from Darwin to Johannesburg as Johannesburg is about 600 ft above sea level

I did have to rearrange the crockery storage after 2 plates went awol and one broke in "a bit of weather"

When I first moved to yachts from dinghies I didn't know about reefing - I was given a quick and concise education on a rather fun night watch broad reaching when I emptied the galley onto the skipper's sea berth.

I got out of sync surfing down the waves - it included jam on the ceiling and butter in the skipper's hair
