On the chart below there is a restricted area marked. Can anyone tell me what it is for? I mean the bit actually with the words "Restricted Area" to the left of "Port Offices"

Thanks

normally it means that movements of ships and yachts in that area is controlled by the local Harbour Master; other activities such as fishing, anchoring, use of whistles, etc, may also be statutorily controlled.

The limits of the Restricted Area are usually deefined in a box at the bottom of the chart.

The more serious area to be aware of is Prohibited Area.

Thanks for that, it's not my area but I was asked about restricted areas in general the other day and that area came up as an example. Would there not normally be some notes on the chart as well somewhere?

I tried that and there is no option on the context menu for "feature properties" in this case.

Interesting. The Navionics on my iPod shows that area with just a no anchoring symbol, I will have a look at the Garmin chart when I get in....

... I have looked on our system and I think what is happening is that Mapsource is not showing the anchor prohibited symbols but it is bringing up the restricted area label when you hover the pointer inside the area.

As far as i can remember, Mapsource doesn't use anchor prohibited symbols, least not any that i've seen.

Just looked on my Navionics chart with Raytech and you're right, it is a prohibited anchoring area. Equally interesting it that the area of deep water just off of the top of the screenshot is shown as "Little Nore anchorage area" on my Navionics card, but is not mentioned on Bluechart. I've also looked around the areas of approach to Felixstowe and the Thames Estuary and Bluechart reveals no details about any of the restricted or prohibited areas. I've also noticed an area near the SW Shipwash, off Felixstowe, that is marked as prohibited on Bluechart and i know for a fact that is incorrect.

We may have different versions, because ours is bristling with them. :)

It may also be a detail setting, but I am on a limb there.

I'm using Bluechart Atlantic v9.5 with the latest Mapsource on a PC. Detail set to max. Perhaps you only get them on a plotter ?

EDIT : Lots of anchor symbols next to the marinas etc, but no "no anchoring" symbols that i can see.

Odd. My Mapsource is 6.15.11 and Bluechart Atlantic 9.5 from disc, not a chart card. Can you give an example location where you see the "no anchoring" symbol ?

On my screen there was one right in the middle of the screen grab Jokerboat posted.

I shall have a look at the version numbers and see if I can get a screen grab in a bit....

Very interesting thread.

I understand it is all fairly academic detail, but I hope this is a useful reminder to those who "rely" on their loaded electronic chart as completely "accurate".

Please remember - All charts (and maps on land) can only be a guide! No1 eyeballs & fully engaged brain are also required, plus e/sounder, pilot book & whatever other gadgets may be available
