Chart Cartridges

I currently have a Navionics XL (Xtra Large) cartridge for my (Furuno 1650) plotter.
Having enquired on the availablity/cost of an update, I have been told that the chart is now only available in L (Large) format. The coverage area appears the same.

Can anyone explain the difference between an XL and L cartridge?
How often do folk update their cartridges?

Also there was a posting here from one of our Dutch friends regarding a mail order site in the USA for cheap Navionics charts ( I can't remember who they were) - I used them and they where very good on price and delivery.
