Charity Cycle Ride... looking for forumites to join us next year

1st of January is within grasp and along with it plans are forming to start my running again to lose weight and up my fitness; the big question is at which point should I start cycling, what sort of distances should I be looking to do and at what point do you push to the next level?

Please don't tell me to go to a gym and jump on an exercise bike, I would rather stab blunt cocktail sticks into various parts of my body than be bored out of my tiny little mind on an exercise bike staring at some poxy unintelligible music video on a small screen with no sound because I keep forgetting to take headphones. I am however happy to run or cycle outdoors in the rain or cold, after all it will be good practice for the 6th of July!

Is there some kind of App where we can share progress with each other to help keep motivated or a monthly forum cycle ride for us to join in?

Any thoughts anyone?

Erm - first off - I think it's 6th JUNE not July ...

Sign up for a free account on Strava then join the Strava group ... there's a link in the dedicated forum ...

It's never too early to start riding - be careful if it's icy though - that's probably when you'd want to hit the exercise bike/turbo ...

Best way to start is to try a gentle ride - so you can hold a conversation (not just in your head - talk out loud if you're riding alone) - I don't know your fitness, but you should be able to do a 10 mile route fairly easily and (assuming it's not hilly) that'll take about an hour - you can then do two different sorts of efforts - the first is just a mile builder - so add 5 miles to the route each week and see how you get on, you'll not go (much) faster but you'll build stamina. The other one is intervals (much easier on a static bike) where you ride easy for a few minutes then beat the cr4p out of yourself for a few minutes, rinse and repeat ... that's the one that will build your speed - and probably best avoided until it's a) warmer and b) you want to ride much faster! Really, for now you should just be looking at mile eating ...

if you have a smartphone then you can download the strava app and join the group - it's great for motivation (seeing just how many more miles someone else has ridden this week) ... and allows you to track your progress ... it can become a little addictive though so don't blame me when you're buying £2k road bikes and lycra just because someone else has stolen your KOM ... ;)

68 miles sounds like a long way, but it isn't. Most people can easily hold an average of 10mph, many can do 12mph all without training. 15mph is achievable for many after not a lot of training (although it depends how hilly your route is). 68 miles broken down into chunks goes very quickly and in a group you'll not notice it fly by.

The training you require will mostly be about getting used to the saddle and getting used to your kit - you'd want to do the main ride on your usual bike/saddle and your normal kit (shorts) - the last thing you need is to be wearing in some new kit on your longest ride yet ...

Yep, some of us use Strava, at www.strava.com which can be set up on an iphone or android, or can use dedicated running/cycling kit for mor advanced stuff... there is already a group that Gary has set up on there to share activities, and has a league table of distance, climbs etc... at http://app.strava.com/clubs/119263

On your first question, get a few short miles in sooner rather than later, but you don't need to get too carried away with extensive rides yet.... running and cycling make excellent partners for training, with both doing good for cardio vascular fitness, and yet avoiding excessive mileage in either, and hence reducing risk of injury.

I may well put together a little suggested plan for a wider audience and post it soon if that helps!

To help fill the coffers I'm offering a 6 man Seago liferaft bought new in 2010 so in need of a £300 service will delivery to Solent area for a donation to the cause.

Chris, thanks for your kind offer. Just spotted this and it's appreciated, we'll add the liferaft to the raffle list :encouragement:

OK lets consider it 'sold' to the raffle then. I'm still available for duties on the day - just don't know what you want me to do yet. Also thinking of moving the boat around to OV for the weekend so its local to the B&N

Afternoon all, I hope you don't mind me posting this in the mobo section.

Following successfully completing a 70 mile ride for Breast Cancer Research in September, a few forum members are looking to undertake a similar distance ride from Penton Hook Marina to Ocean Village Marina sometime around June of next year.

As said, it'd be great if we could get as many forum members participating as possible to raise as large a sum of money as possible for a great cause. We'll be approaching a few companies to request that they help advertise the event with the hope that they will sponsor us too.

I hope you don't mind if I also arrange to have 'The Tipsy Mouse' embroided on our cycle shirts so it has a YBW Forum feel to it.

It's my intention to arrange a Beer and Natter gathering for the evening of the day we'll complete the ride so you all get the opportunity to participate even if you don't undertake the ride yourself. It's also a great opportunity to take the pee out of yours truely dressed in tight fitting Lycra :D

This forum is an amazing place once it gets behind something as can be seen from the impressive total raised for the London to Brighton ride with most of that money donated by you good people. https://www.justgiving.com/Gary-Pearson4/ I am hoping you'll get behind this one too to help make it a success.

More details to follow once arrangements have been firmed up

Kindest regards Gary

Time to take the sticky down?
