Charity Cycle Ride... looking for forumites to join us next year

Great work Gary, i have just created a just giving page and joined the team.

for anyone looking to do it, its very simple, you need to create a fundraisng page for the event (remembering we are raising for British Heart Foundation) and then associate it with the team..

If anyone needs help setting it up please shout and we can talk you through it.

Hmm, well, courtesy of Black Friday I now have a bike that might make it ... but the rider???
Is it even possible to train for a 70 mile ride in the time available, starting from not-a-great-place fitness wise?

Yep, there's plenty of time..... I went from a 30 a day smoker who did no exercise at all, to completing an Ironman in 12 months, so this ride is more than possible. If we ride slowly (which we will), then the training doesn't need to be excessive either... just basic fitness, and a bit of time in the saddle to accustom the posterior, and condition a few cycling specific muscles a little.

Yep, plenty of time. You need to get some miles on your legs, and your backside used to time in the saddle. Start with something like 10-15 mile rides, and build up to say a couple of 40 mile rides the 2 weekends before the ride. You should feel comfortable to ride for stints of 2 hours. Initially you should start at 30-60 mins. Your legs and backside will tell you when to stop. We will have 2 or 3 rest stops on the day, so will ride for 20 to 30 mile stints. We will probably have 2 or 3 groups of cyclists going at different paces to accommodate the range of riders. The key is not to take it too seriously, but to enjoy the event.

Hi Gary,

Kerry is an experienced London/Brighton and London/Oxford cyclist whereas I am just a short fat bald bloke who needs to lose weight and get fitter.

Can you add the both of us to your list?

Nice one Paul and Kerry, great to have you on the team :encouragement:

Well thats it, I've decided to set some goals for 2015 and becoming less of a lardy arse is one of them.
So as long as everyone promises not to laugh (too much) at my shopping bike, I'm going to grace you with my presence.
I will take pride in moaning the most on the way, not taking anything seriously, certainly not wearing that lycra get up (more shorts and flip-flops) and coming in last.
I will need a full list of refreshment opportunities, on-route massage arrangements and a scantily dressed physiotherapist to attend to me as soon as i cross the finishing line.
I will be happy to participate in a pre event training programme, with any local riders if required.

great news Roy, good to have you on the team.. no worries at all regarding whether you come in last, first or somewhere in the middle, it's all abut raising dosh for a good cause and if you get something out of it along the way, even better :encouragement: I'll add you to the list of riders in a mo.

1st of January is within grasp and along with it plans are forming to start my running again to lose weight and up my fitness; the big question is at which point should I start cycling, what sort of distances should I be looking to do and at what point do you push to the next level?

Please don't tell me to go to a gym and jump on an exercise bike, I would rather stab blunt cocktail sticks into various parts of my body than be bored out of my tiny little mind on an exercise bike staring at some poxy unintelligible music video on a small screen with no sound because I keep forgetting to take headphones. I am however happy to run or cycle outdoors in the rain or cold, after all it will be good practice for the 6th of July!

Is there some kind of App where we can share progress with each other to help keep motivated or a monthly forum cycle ride for us to join in?

Any thoughts anyone?
