Afternoon all, I hope you don't mind me posting this in the mobo section.

Following successfully completing a 70 mile ride for Breast Cancer Research in September, a few forum members are looking to undertake a similar distance ride from Penton Hook Marina to Ocean Village Marina sometime around June of next year.

Proceeds will be going to a heart related charity to say thank you for the awesome help I received during my recent medical blip involving a viral heart infection..

I'm starting this thread to ask if anyone would like to get involved, join us on the ride or simply just spread the word so it gets as much support as possible please

Currently we have the following riders taking part

  • ogaryo (Gary - organiser)
  • Rafiki (Paul - organiser)
  • Zippy (Howard - organiser)
  • Full Circle (Jim & Lynn)
  • Aardee (Graham)
  • Russell (Russell & Nicky)
  • Fireball (Andrew) - may be able to make it
  • Raven (Alan)
  • Phoenix of Hamble (Neil)
  • Spottydog (John)
  • DJE (Dave)
  • SpannerMonkey (Mark)
  • Elessar (Mark)
  • CPD (Alan)

Total Number of Riders 16

Support Volunteers

  • CharlieAlpha (Chris)
  • Sulley (Simone)
  • Sarabande (Tim)

As said, it'd be great if we could get as many forum members participating as possible to raise as large a sum of money as possible for a great cause. We'll be approaching a few companies to request that they help advertise the event with the hope that they will sponsor us too.

I hope you don't mind if I also arrange to have 'The Tipsy Mouse' embroided on our cycle shirts so it has a YBW Forum feel to it.

It's my intention to arrange a Beer and Natter gathering for the evening of the day we'll complete the ride so you all get the opportunity to participate even if you don't undertake the ride yourself. It's also a great opportunity to take the pee out of yours truely dressed in tight fitting Lycra :D

This forum is an amazing place once it gets behind something as can be seen from the impressive total raised for the London to Brighton ride with most of that money donated by you good people. https://www.justgiving.com/Gary-Pearson4/ I am hoping you'll get behind this one too to help make it a success.

More details to follow once arrangements have been firmed up

Kindest regards Gary

flippin heck gary I admire you for trying to raise money for charity but may be you should leave the cycling to the fitter/healthier forum members as I think one scare is enough for anyone unless you get yourself one of those electric bikes :encouragement:

ha ha.. the cycle ride I did in September didn't cause the heart thing mate, it was a virus infection 3 days after the ride.. I'll get myself fitter too although the 70 ride in September was well within my capabilities at the time.. thanks for the concern all the same but I will definitely be undertaking this one :)

We will have a go, but we have ancient bikes not suite to 63.3 miles, and possibly no inclination to do that distance anyway. How about a couple of stops on the way, to allow us to join in?

Mine is a Raleigh Chiltern in Sherwood Green. A bit like this one, has a 3 speed Sturmey Archer.

That's a great idea. we will have to have stops along the way, the London to Brighton ride had 3... it shouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility to place them strategically so you (and others) can join in for one or more of the legs, especially if I ensure there's a combination of short, medium and long legs along the route.

I've added you and your good lady to the list on the first page :encouragement:

It's often the case that people who've had a heart scare are 'the fitter/healthier forum members'. People sitting smugly on their arses scoffing at others who've had heart problems would be better off worrying about themselves. I had angina and have 4 x stents in my heart. I've been slack this weekend, only cycling 71 miles. I usually do more - averaging around 12-13mph at 145 bpm ave and peaking at around 180. I cycle with others who have also had heart problems. My 'fitter/healthier' friends are too scared to come cycling with me as they know they'd get whipped. The continuous feed into A&E of people with heart attacks is drawn from people who think they're fine when they're not.

Please put my name down Gary. :encouragement:

Edit - please add SWMBO Nicky too.

Hi Russell. great to have you both on board, adding you to the list now.

p.s. the angiogram shows no CVD and the ticker's ticking away as it should so I'm pretty confident I'll going to be ok for this one.. without coming across as patronising, well done you for keeping up the fitness regime' after your ops :encouragement:

It's great to see names coming forward already for this one.. please may I ask that you share your first names and those who'll be cycling with you as Russell has and I'll add those names to the list. thanks Gary

p.s. I have contacted a few organisations to drum up support, including the BHF... I'll post back here what response I get.

Bum ... I would've done it Gary - but there's no way I can commit to June time next year. Training isn't the problem cos I could do 70+ miles tomorrow - it's home life that will complicate matters.

Anyway enjoy a fantastic ride :)

Hi Gary,

If you've no objection to a Northerner getting involved I wouldn't mind coming along - assuming that it will be done on a weekend day.

Look forward to hearing more detail in due course

Shall I add you to the list anyway as we can always bring it forward to late May or early July if that helps.. the date has yet to be chosen so it's in our gift to do so at this stage

Tell you what - I'll drop you a PM with my email (assuming you'll use that method to keep participants up to date) - if I can make the date I will, it'll probably be a last minute thing for me - I should be able to keep up unless you're going Pro speeds! ;)

So, a quick update:

I've been in touch with the British Heart Foundation and am in the process of completing one of their forms to secure support. That support will be along the lines of supply of BHF T shirts, BHF logo balloons and importantly, the assistance of a local BHF Fundraising event organiser :encouragement: i'll update with the details when I get more.

I also have the kind offer of support from one of the forum members to organise updating the T Shirts with the YBW Mouse. I need to do a bit of homework on that first to ensure BHF are ok with that e.g. they don't expect to have their shirts returned.

Some ideas coming in too regarding safety car / motorbike support and I will be driving the intended route in the next week or so to suss out 'pit stops'

My suggestion is we ride as a group as much as possible and make the final pit stop close to the finish line, we all then regroup at that stop in case some folk have fallen behind so we can all finish at the same time i.e. it's not a race, it's more important to finish (and party) as one at the end of the ride. Again, I'll post up more about that when the route details are firmed up.

Finally, I'll put up some guidelines around some prerequisites for the ride in a few days time e.g. wearing something hi viz as a must, tools & spares to take etc etc

cheers Gary
