These wouldn't be static nets, left in position.
They would be deployed to disable migrant vessels that refuse to cooperate with Border Force.
Think stinger......

Strikes me that crossing the channel is going to be a lot more interesting next year.

Exclusive: Britain to use nets to 'disable' dinghies carrying migrants across Channel (Telegraph)

Home Office may use nets to stop migrant boats crossing Channel (Guardian)

I hope the Clandestine Channel Threat Commander has done his homework. If they leave nets between Portsmouth and St Vaast or Cherbourg - or perhaps the Channel Isles, I envisage a lot of callouts from propeller-tangled yotties.
I'd be more worried about having a Q flag, the correct paperwork at a port of entry and the 14 day quarantine. Summer 2021 will be interesting.

Could they be used against PWC / jet skis? ?
You're thinking of Studland Bay on a Saturday aren't you. I wonder if they would miss a few hundred metres or so. Only snag would be if a lone diver were to be caught in it on his way to harass the local wildlife.

PWC/Jet Ski's have a jet of high speed water propelling them and are able - I did it 40 years ago on a Kawasaki - to use fixed obstacles as a lift off point like a MX Bike leaps a rise. We used car tyres with inflated inner tubes anchored in position to create a rounded shallow hump. You got good air if you hit it at speed with your weight well back and used the off road motorcycling technique to jump.

It was at Kawasaki's training water for testing and training for the Jetski race series.

Good fun but boring after a while - too easy!

Only thing to stop a PWC/Jet Ski would be a tightly stretched rope at chest hight......................................................
