Channel Islands Cruise

wouldnt bother with st helier - far less attractive place than st pp. try alderney instead.

As a Jerseyman;), whilst it pains me to admit there is some truth in this, there is far more to Jersey than just St Helier - both from the land and from the sea.

Taking just the sea, for example, anchoring below Gorey castle takes some beating. On land, consider a visit to Elizabeth Castle or hire a bike and cycle to Corbiere.

It would be a shame to dimiss Jersey just because the harbour setting is not pretty.

Then again, I am biased. :-)

I wouldn't go past Herm ever on a cruise. Both to wander, the best "shop" for children and Christmas presents and also eating. OK the pub is more basic but look at the menu for the carvery or Hotel. My wife will not let me eat anywhere else.
Iles Chausey yes, Granville no, St Malo yes, then on up to the Rance and Dinan. Really enjoyable for a cruise in company, and also interesting for the less gung ho amongst the crews[ females].
I'm off there in April.

I agree with all but the no for Granville. I am biased as I lived there for 3 years and would be interested to know why you say no. The high town is worth a look and there are plenty of places to eat in every range.
I see St Malo as one of those places you should go once, to see the walled city but as it is all relativley new, not worth returning to, in my opinion.
I love The Rance and Dinan but getting up the river takes up lots of time. I did it in a week from Granville and it seemed rushed.
As my boat is now called Chausey, I think you may guess my favourite place in the area! The French often refer to them as the little Scillies and, like the Scillies, getting away for the moorings to anchore in peace is a joy.

Allan, have they moved the power cable above the lock now? Our air draught 15+metres and Pilot warned us orf year before last. Dinans great BTW.
Went by car with French sailing friends who moor just above the 'Jersey Lily' instead.- the Commune have a jetty there- but you can get 'neaped' in August, with the factories on hols!!

I went up the river in my previous boat, which was only 22ft. So I can't help with airdraft. Most of the time I visited Dinan I went by car, it is one of nicest places to walk around that I have ever visited.

St p.port/ St.hellier

Ref your comments ref the beauty of the inner Isles, my very brief visit to the Isles a few years ago, gave me the impression if you could juxtapose the two capitals, Jersey would be spot on.

Alderney

Hi there

Notice that you are thinking about a cruise to France and The Channel Islands. Mainbrayce run the water taxi and chandlery on Alderney and would be delighted to help in any way with your planning or to be of any assistance if you do come here. Keep in touch with your plans.

I try to visit Alderney at least once a year. The Club Sandwich in the "Divers" and a good meal in the "First and Last" are something that need to be experienced once in everyone's life. Who need to climb up the hill? That said there are nice, reasonably priced eateries for those willing to make the journey.

BTW I can endorse Mainbrayce, under new ownership and improving, but you might be better to phone for the "taxi".

I've been up the Rance in a Dufour 40 with 19m air draught. Did go under some cables, but didn't make it to Dinan, we ran aground before there :-)

Thanks Topcat - glad to hear the improved service is appreciated. I couldn't agree more about the Club Sandwich in the Divers - one of the best in the world and reasonably priced.

The Georgian, up in town, is going to be under new management this summer and are planning a courtesy bus from the harbour which we will endeavour to link in with the water taxi.

As I said if any of you would like any help or info just give us a shout.

Thanks for that- loads of room on top

Time spent in reconaissence is never wasted!

That should give us a bit of slack then. Running aground less of a problem for us, a lift keel is just another depth gauge ;-)
