Did for the first couple of crossings, (just to know somone was there). But do tell a shore contact of you intentions and log in with both parties. suspect CG would not do anything unless your shore contact contacts them.
The only time i do a radio check with solent is when i'm about 10 miles out of cherb to check my signal strength.
it is worth filling out a cg66 form (online) for the coastguard records, be entered on their database and notify them of longer passages, it isn't a requirement 'tho. not in uk anyway-yet.
as above make shore someone reliable knows you're passage plan eta bolt holes etc and if poss, someone at the other end (harbour master/marina) knows when to roughly expect you. It 's important to be able to notify these people if you radicly change or abandon you're plan's to alleviate concern.
good luck keep a weather eye open

[/ QUOTE ]CG66 registered with CG, describes your vessel in detail, its equipment etc (including the colour of your antifoul!!). You MUST use the buddy system, even if you file a report that you are going wherever. Your shoreside buddy rings the CG when you don't phone, they will then take preliminary action. The CG will not take any action without being prompted. Not on the basis of your passage report.
Note, they will not jump out of their pram and launch helos etc.. they will start taking positive action perhaps 24 hrs after preliminary - depending on circumstance. Preliminary action will be to contact their opposite numbers in CROSS or whatever CG is responsible for where you are going, they will put out regular calls on VHF to you and gradually escalate to a serious level.
It'd do no harm. Better to complete a CG66 then the CG has all the details. I'd wager that Solent will be more than a little busy this weekend so perhaps phone it through rather than clog him up!!
I got into some nasty weather off Cherbourg so was going to be late "phoning home". I got onto the radio to Solent who looked up the contact on the CG66 and phoned to confirm all was well but ETA now three hours later..
