If a boat already has SSR registration, is it possible to change to Part 1 registration at a later date (assuming same owner).

I am already aware of the pro's and cons of the two types I am just interested in whether it can be done.

If so, what's involved?

Yes it is. To do so contact M.O.T. at Cardiff (I think).
A boat likes yours should be Part1 as that means someone
wishing to buy it can get a Marine Mortgage as opposed to other forms of loan.

I think an SSR reg is only valid for five years. After that you need to re-new it if you wish, or do nothing, or go for part one. But you can leave the SSR and go for part one at any time - just send in your SSR with a note to cancel it. Then apply for part one. Give the DVLA, or whoever it is deals with SSR (Cardiff), a call and I'm sure they'll throw more light on this - lots of folks have done it.

Yes you can change it but why? If someone wants to buy a boat that is not Part one and they require a mortgage then the finance company will insist on it being done so I don't really see the point of spending £150 to part one register because it would be part of the new buyers costs. What part one says is that you have good title and charges can be registered by mortgagors. The important part is having good title with original builders certificate and bills of sale from previous owners back to new or 5 years whichever the shorter. Remember that the bill of sale trail extends from builder to dealer then dealer to first buyer and so on.

The builder to dealer thing is interesting, for instance, Princess are the builders and the dealers so first bill of sale is from Princess to first owner. Fairline have dealers so first bill of sale is from builders to dealer. I have no idea how other builders work but there will probably be a number of each type.
